Swimming and Diving Results
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – For the Southern Connecticut State University women's swimming and diving team, it came down to the final race on Sunday afternoon against Connecticut College to see who was the best team on that day. Unfortunately for the Owls, Conn. College edged them out in the 200 yard freestyle relay event to defeat Southern, 152-139.
Senior
Amanda Thomas (Oakville, Conn.) had an outstanding day finishing with three first-place marks in the 100 and 200 yard butterfly events and the 200 yard IM. She took 100 yard fly in 59.06, the 200 fly in 2:06.97 and the 200 IM in 2:08.86.
Taking two firsts in the 100 and 200 yard backstroke events as well as being on the third-place 200 yard freestyle relay team, senior
Nicole Caron (Marlboro, Mass.) also had a strong outing for the Owls. Caron picked up the 100 yard backstroke event in 1:01.69 and the 200 yard backstroke event in 2:12.74.
Also contributing to the third-place 200 yard freestyle relay team in the final event of the day was sophomore
Rachel Smolensky (Norwalk, Conn.), senior
Meghan Fay (Branford, Conn.) and freshman
Christina Lavery (West Haven, Conn.).
Fay also took home a trio of third-place finishes in the 200, 500 and 1000 yard freestyle events, while Smolensky had a duo of second-place results in the 100 and 200 yard backstroke events.
Other Owls who tallied some first-place finishes were junior
Elizabeth Hess (Iowa City, Iowa), taking the 100 yard breaststroke in 1:09.31, and senior
Ashley Thomas (Oakville, Conn.) who captured the one-meter dive event.
Hess also had a second-place mark in the 200 breaststroke. Junior
Anna Pleban also had a solid afternoon finishing the day with two second-place marks in the 50 and 100 yard freestyle events and a third-place finish in the 200 yard freestyle.
The Owls will host Queens College on Friday at 4 p.m. before going on the road to Le Moyne for their final regular season meet on Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
