DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Senior captains,
Sarah Beres (Ellington, Conn.) and
Lauren McVey (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) of the Southern Connecticut State University volleyball team powered the Owls in a winning effort on the road against Mercy, 3-1. Beres contributed 12 kills and a season best 14 digs with five block assists, while and McVey added her 11th double-double of the season with 11 kills and 13 digs.
Natasha Carlbert (Southington, Conn.) had eight kills, five digs and three service aces.
Taylor Carlson (Centennial, Colo.) had 24 assists, four digs and two service aces.
Kelly Gunneson (Cheshire, Conn.) added three kills with four digs.
Olivia Lathrop (Farmington, Conn.) had six kills and two block assists in the effort.
Owls won the first two sets 25-18 fending off the charging Mavericks. SCSU stumped an early lead in the second set as Mercy was ahead 8-2 in the second set. Owls drop the third set 26-24 after pulling the match to within two at 19-17 and tying the score at 24-all. In the fourth set, the Owls jumped out to an early 8-5 lead and fought hard late at 22-all to take the set 25-23 and match by a score of 3-1.
The Owls are now 14-9 overall and 3-6 in Northeast-10 Conference play.
The Owls will be back in action Nov. 2 as part of a tri-match with Felician and Philadelphia. The first match is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
