A NEW JOURNEY BEGINS
The Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team opens up the 2016-17 season on Nov. 12 as the Owls participate in the 2016 UB Women's Basketball Tournament. On Saturday, the Owls take on Queens (N.Y.) College at 2 p.m. before facing the University of Bridgeport on Sunday afternoon at 4 p.m.
IN SEASON OPENERS
Southern Connecticut is 32-14 all-time in season-opening games. The Owls won last year's season opener against the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, 62-53, as part of the 2015 UB Women's Basketball Classic.
ALL-TIME AGAINST QUEENS
Southern Connecticut and Queens (N.Y.) are tied in the all-time series with a record of 8-8.
LAST TIME VS. QUEENS
Southern Connecticut defeated Queens (N.Y.) in a non-conference game back on January 9, 2012, 61-51. Sylvonya Moore led the way with a team-high 18 points for the Owls.
ALL-TIME AGAINST BRIDGEPORT
Bridgeport leads the Owls, 23-17, in the all-time series.
LAST TIME VS. BRIDGEPORT
Southern Connecticut defeated the Purple Knights last year, 86-64, as part of the UB Women's Basketball Classic.
Nicole Grossbard led the Owls that evening with a career-high 20 points and team-high seven assists.

LOOKING BACK AT LAST SEASON
The Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team with a winning record of 19-11 as well as qualified for the Northeast-10 Conference Championship for the third straight year. SCSU reached the semifinals before losing on the road to the eventual champion, Bentley.
HIT A CHAMPIONSHIP SHOT...MEET A SUPERSTAR
Prior to coming to SCSU,
Maria Weselyj connected for the game-winning shot in the 2013 CIAC Class LL state championship while competing for Mercy High School. The shot gained national and international acclaim, and earlier this fall was included in Brad Paisley's video entitled "Today". Weselyj eventually met Paisley after the release of the video while he was on tour in Connecticut.
LYNCH MAKING AN IMPACT
Kate Lynch '08 begins her second season as head coach for the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team. Lynch has compiled a 100-76 overall record as a head coach. Lynch remains the all-time leading scorer in Owls' history (1,779 points) and ranks seventh all-time in rebounds (650). Following the 2015-16 season, she was selected by the WBCA as one of its "Thirty Under 30" honorees.
TOUGH COMPETITION AWAITS
The Owls will face four teams in 2016-17 that made the NCAA Tournament a year ago - Queens, Bentley, Saint Anselm and American International.
BEATHEA, POWELL EARN CONFERENCE HONORS
Jackie Beathea and
Danielle Powell earned Northeast-10 Conference regular season honors for their play in 2015-16. Beathea was named to the First-Team while Powell was named to the Third-Team.

Danielle Powell
• 15th in rebounds with 594.

EXCELLING IN THE CLASSROOM
Southern Connecticut had 11 student-athletes selected to the Northeast-10 Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll for their work in the classroom during the 2015-16 academic year.
FIVE OWLS HONORED BY D2ADA
Chloe Brinton,
Paige Decker, Abigail Hurlbert, Elizabeth McKinley and
Taylor McLaughlin were all named as 2016 recipients of the Division II Athletic Directors Association Academic Achievement Award for their work in the classroom.
2007 NCAA CHAMPS TO BE HONORED TWICE
Since the conclusion of the 2015-16 season, the national champion 2007 NCAA women's basketball team has been recognized with a pair of honors. The Owls were selected for induction as part of the Northeast-10 Conference Hall of Fame's Class of 2016. In addition, the team was also selected for induction into the SCSU Athletic Hall of Fame and will be formally honored in May, 2017.
