Balanced Attack Leads Owls Past NYIT, 68-60

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team defeated the New York Institute of Technology, 68-60 at Moore Field House. The Owls advance to 7-3 overall, while the Bears drop to 9-2.
 
Junior Kiana Steinauer (Oakville, Ontario) collected her eighth double-double of the year with 20 points and season-highs in rebounds with 20 and in assists with four, while fellow junior Imani Wheeler (Dumfries, Va.) broke her career-high in points collecting 17 on the night. Senior Amanda Pfohl (Trumbull, Conn.) broke a career-high in steals with five, while notching her ninth double-digit point game of the season and her seventh straight with 13 points. Senior Allie Smith (Danbury, Conn.) scored a career-high 10 points and grabbed five rebounds, two assists and two steals. 
 

1st QUARTER (NYIT 19, SCSU 18)
  • NYIT opened the first half with a 8-0 run. Southern attempted to claw back, but the Bears held their lead finishing the frame up by one point.

2nd QUARTER (NYIT 42, SCSU 34)
  • The Bears continued their offensive surge in the second quarter outscoring the Owls 23-16. They took an eight point lead heading into halftime.

3rd QUARTER (SCSU 48, NYIT 45)
  • Southern came out of halftime with a vengeance as they held NYIT to just three points in the third quarter. The Bears were 1-for-14 in field goals for the entire third quarter, with their lone points coming in the final two minutes of the frame.

4th QUARTER (SCSU 68, NYIT 60)
  • Coming out of halftime, the Owls surged with a 21-5 run in the final 20 minutes of play to capture the 68-60 at Moore Field House.

NOTABLE FACTS
  • With 20 points and 20 rebounds against NYIT, Kiana Steinauer becomes the first player in program history with 20 points and 20 rebounds in two career games. She previously tallied 23 points and 23 rebounds against Adelphi on Dec. 2, 2017.
  • Jackie Beathea was the last player to accomplish 20-plus points and 20-plus rebounds in a single game back on Nov. 21, 2015 against Post University.
  • Imani Wheeler broke her career-high in points with 17. Her previous career-high was set at 13 points and last achieved in the Owls game against Pace on Dec. 8.
  • Amanda Pfohl broke her career-high in steals with five on the night. Her highest steal total in three seasons had been three, previously set on Nov. 28, 2018 in the Owls game against New Haven.
  • Allie Smith broke her career-high in points with ten. Her previous career-best was back on Nov. 14, 2018, where she scored nine points against Saint Rose.
  • Four Owls were in double-digit points: Steinauer (20), Wheeler (17), Pfohl (13) and Smith (10). The last time Southern had four players in double-digit points was back on Nov. 25, 2018 against Queens.

Southern is set to travel to Philadelphia, Pa. on Saturday, Dec. 15 for a 1 p.m. non-conference match-up with Chestnut Hill.
