Owls Fall To Chestnut Hill, 69-63

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team fell to Chestnut Hill, 69-63, at Sorgenti Arena in Philadelphia. The Owls drop to 7-4 overall, while the Griffins improve to 2-7 overall.
 
Senior Allie Smith (Danbury, Conn.) broke a career-high in points for the second straight game picking up 15 points, while shooting 50% from the field and collecting five rebounds. Kiana Steinauer (Oakville, Ontario) collected her ninth double-double of the season putting up 16 points and 13 rebounds along with game-high five steals. Erin Ryder (Congers, N.Y.) picked up a career-high in rebounds with seven, while chipping in six points. Aaliyah Walker (Toronto, Ontario) collected 10 points, four assists and four rebounds, while Imani Wheeler (Dumfries, Va.) collected eight assists on the day and added seven points. Amanda Pfohl (Trumbull, Conn.) chipped in nine points in the Owls loss.
 
1st QUARTER (CH 13, SCSU 8)
• Chestnut Hill started the game off on a 10-3 run to take control early. The Griffins outscored the Owls 13-8 in the first frame.
 
2nd QUARTER (CH 34, SCSU 22)
• There was a two-minute window where both teams were scoreless, but Chestnut Hill came out on the other side as they went on an 8-3 run following the drought. Walker grabbed five of her eventual 10 points in the second quarter for the Owls, but the Griffins had a 12-point lead heading into halftime.
 
3rd QUARTER (CH 50, SCSU 37)
• It was a tight third quarter as the Griffins narrowly outscored the Owls, 16-15. 
• The Griffins were up by double-digit points for the entire quarter and held their largest lead at the eight-minute mark up by 18 points.
 
4th QUARTER (CH 69, SCSU 63)
• Southern ramped up the offense in the final frame as they outscored Chestnut Hill 26-19.
• The Owls made a push in the final two minutes of the fourth quarter ignited by a three-pointer from Steinauer to get them started. Pfohl then collected all nine of her points in a 1:45 span where she hit back-to-back-to-back three pointers.
• Southern erased their double-digit deficit, where they came within five points to put the pressure on the Griffins, but Chestnut Hill's balanced attack through 40 minutes of play was the difference-maker as they took the 69-63 victory.
 
NOTABLE FACTS
  • Allie Smith had a career-high in points with 15. She broke her previous career-high in points (10) in the Owls win over NYIT on Dec. 10.
  • Erin Ryder's seven rebounds is a career-high, which was previously set on November 15, 2015 at Bridgeport with four.
  • Kiana Steinauer collected her ninth double-double of the season with 16 points and 13 rebounds.
  • Amanda Pfohl collected all nine of her points in the final two minutes of the game off of three straight three-pointers.
  • The Owls had three players in double-digit points for the third straight game: Steinauer (16), Smith (15) and Walker (10).
