Women's Basketball Defeats Dominican, 85-71

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team defeated Dominican College, 85-71, at Moore Field House. The Owls improve to 9-4 overall, while the Chargers drop to 4-7 overall.
 
Junior Imani Wheeler (Dumfries, Va.) notched a career-high 23 points on the day, while adding three assists and two steals. Junior Kiana Steinauer (Oakville, Ontario) collected her NCAA-leading 11th double-double of the year with 23 points and 15 rebounds. Junior Aaliyah Walker (Toronto, Ontario) tallied 14 points as well as team-highs with five assists and three steals. Senior Amanda Pfohl (Trumbull, Conn.) registered 12 points, three assists and two steals in the Owls win.
 
1st QUARTER (SCSU 29, DOM 14)
• Southern opened the quarter on a 20-6 run to set the tone for the game. They outscored Dominican, 29-14, and took a 14-point lead heading into the second quarter.
• Steinauer collected 12 of her eventual 23 points in the first frame.
 
2nd QUARTER (SCSU 49, DOM 31)
• The Chargers and Owls traded shots in the second quarter, but Southern finished the frame with an 18-point lead. Steinauer registered her double-double just 1:17 into the second quarter with a defensive rebound off her own shot.
 
3rd QUARTER (SCSU 70, DOM 50)
• Southern's offense continued their red-hot streak, outscoring Dominican, 21-19, for the quarter. 
• Wheeler collected eight of her 23 points in the period while Steinauer and Smith collected five and four, respectively.
 
4th QUARTER (SCSU 85, DOM 71)
• The Owls held a 25-point lead, their largest of the day, at 8:52 off a Wheeler jumper. A combined offensive effort was the difference-maker as Southern captured the 85-71 victory over Dominican to close out 2018.
 
NOTABLE FACTS
Imani Wheeler set a new career-high in points with 23. Her previous career-high came on Dec. 10 against NYIT, where she had 17 points.
Kiana Steinauer collected her 11th double-double of the year with 23 points and 15 rebounds. She leads the NE10 and NCAA DII in the category. She is also one of 14 active players in NCAA Division II women's basketball and one of 54 in all divisions with 27 or more double-doubles for her career. 
• Steinauer also grabbed her 700th career rebound, making her one of seven active players in NCAA Division II women's basketball with 700 or more career rebounds. 
• With 12 points, Amanda Pfohl has recorded double-digit points in 10 of the Owls 12 games this season.
• This is the first time this season that two players tallied 20-plus points in the same game (Wheeler-23, Steinauer-23). The last time two Owls had 20-plus points was on January 23, 2018 when Abby Hurlbert had 30 points and Africa Williams had 20 in their win over Assumption.
• For the fifth-straight game, the Owls had three-or-more players' score in double-digits: Wheeler (23), Steinauer (23), Walker (14) and Pfohl (12).

The Owls are set to play their first game of 2019 on Saturday, January 5th in Sparkill, N.Y. when they take on Saint Thomas Aquinas in non-conference play at 1 p.m. at Aquinas Hall Gym.
