Owls Fall To STAC, 67-59

SPARKILL, N.Y. -The Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team dropped a 67-59 decision to Saint Thomas Aquinas at the Aquinas Hall Gym. The Owls drop to 9-5 overall, while the Spartans improve to 12-2 overall.
 
Senior Allie Smith (Danbury, Conn.) topped a career-high in points with 19, while shooting 67% from the field and going 5-for-6 from beyond the arc. Senior Amanda Pfohl (Trumbull, Conn.) notched 14 points, shooting 55% from the field and 57% from beyond the arc with three rebounds and two assists, while junior Imani Wheeler (Dumfries, Va.) chipped in 10 points, six assists and a steal. Junior Kiana Steinauer (Oakville, Ontario) collected 20 boards, nine points, four steals, two assists and a game-high two blocks.
 
1st QUARTER (STAC 17, SCSU 10)
• STAC started the game on a 12-3 run in the first five minutes of play. The Spartans maintained their lead and finished the quarter up seven points.
 
2nd QUARTER (STAC 33, SCSU 23)
• Southern attempted a run in the second quarter, but STAC continued their pressure in the offensive zone. The Spartans narrowly outscored the Owls 16-13.
 
3rd QUARTER (STAC 47, SCSU 45)
• The Owls offense was ignited by a three-pointer from Wheeler as they outscored the Spartans 22-14. STAC didn't register a point in the first four minutes of play in the third quarter; allowing the Owls to go on a 9-0 run and come within three points of their lead.
• Southern gained the lead for the first time after Pfohl sank a three-pointer to put the Owls up by two. STAC's offense responded and they finished the frame with a two-point lead.
 
4th QUARTER (STAC 67, SCSU 59)
• Both squads spent the better half of the fourth quarter trading shots and the lead, but the Spartans balanced attack through 40 minutes of play was the difference-maker as they captured the 67-59 victory in Sparkill, N.Y.
 
NOTABLE FACTS
• Southern dropped a 67-59 decision to Saint Thomas Aquinas on Jan. 5.
Allie Smith topped her career-high in points with 19; collecting 13-of-19 in the second half of play. Her previous career-high came on Dec. 15, 2018 when she had 15 points against Chestnut Hill.
• 
Kiana Steinauer notched 20 rebounds on the day. She has collected double-digit boards in all 14 of the Owls games this season and at least 15 rebounds in 7-of-14 games.
• With 14 points, 
Amanda Pfohl has recorded double-digit points in 12 of the Owls 14 games this season.
• For the sixth-straight game, the Owls had three-or-more players' score in double-digits: Smith (19), Pfohl (14) and Wheeler (10).

The Owls will play their first conference game of 2019 when they host Merrimack College on Wednesday, Jan. 9 at 5:30 p.m. at Moore Field House.
