Football Topped By UNH For Elm City Trophy

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University football team lost a 37-18 decision to the University of New Haven on Saturday in the annual battle for the Elm City Trophy.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Eli Parks (Bristol, Conn.) rushed for 66 yards on 21 carries to lead the ground attack.
- Quarterback Matt Sanzaro (Wethersfield, Conn.) finished 9-of-16 for 111 yards through the air and also rushed nine times for 45 yards with one score.
- Julian Chung (Franklin Square, N.Y.). had a team-high four receptions for 39 yards and one touchdown. Hunter Fluegel (New Bedford, Conn.) had a team-high 58 receiving yards.
- Jhaaron Wallace (Hartford, Conn.) recorded a team-high 10 tackles, including the 200th in his career. He became the ninth player in program history to reach that milestone.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Owls opened the scoring with a 24-yard field goal from Jose Conde (West Haven, Conn.) late in the first quarter. However, the Chargers scored on the ensuing possession to build a 7-3 lead.
- SCSU went back in front early in the second quarter. Sanzaro capped an eight-play, 87-yard drive with a two-yard rush.
- The Chargers went back in front with just 94 seconds before the half when it concluded a 10-play, 95-yard drive. After an Owls' turnover, UNH connected for a field goal on the final play of the first half for a 17-10 cushion at the break.
- In all, the Chargers scored 30 straight points over the second, third and fourth quarters to build a 37-10 lead.
- SCSU closed the scoring midway through the fourth quarter on a four-yard touchdown pass from Matthew Sapere (Old Lyme, Conn.) to Chung. Sapere then followed with a successful two-point rush.
