NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Senior
Ashley Betts (Weymouth, Mass.) of the women's cross country team and senior
David Campbell (Bloomfield, Conn.) of the football team have been named as the Chick-fil-A of North Haven/Southern Connecticut State University Athletes of the Week.
Betts finished 26th overall out of 145 participants at the Adelphi Panther Invitational on Friday. She completed the course in a time of 20.31.6. Thanks in part to Betts' efforts, the Owls placed third overall out of 18 teams, behind only Division I Delaware and the host Panthers.
Campbell played a pivotal role in the Owls' season-opening 35-32 win over Gannon on Thursday. He impacted the game both on special teams and at his defensive back position. With Gannon threatening to stretch its lead to two possessions in the third quarter, Campbell blocked a 33-yard field goal attempt to keep Southern's deficit at 13-7. Then, after the Owls had taken a 28-25 lead in the final minute of regulation, Campbell stepped in front of a Gannon pass and took it 40 yards the other way for a pick six that sealed the win.
Chick-fil-A of North Haven, located at 560 Universal Drive, is serving as the title sponsor of Southern Connecticut State University's 'Athlete of the Week' recognition program.
