Owls Take Battle of the Birds, Defeat Stonehill 73-69

NORTH EASTON, Mass. – The Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team defeated Stonehill College, 73-69 at Merkert Gymnasium. The Owls improve to 11-7 overall and 5-5 in the NE10, while Stonehill drops 12-4 overall and 7-3 in the NE10.
 
Senior Amanda Pfohl (Trumbull, Conn.) led the Owls with 24 points, tying a career-best, while shooting 71% from beyond the arc and 64% from the field. She added two assists and two steals. Kiana Steinauer (Oakville, Ontario) broke an SCSU record in steals with 10. In addition, she notched 16 points, a team-leading eight rebounds and four blocks. Allie Smith (Danbury, Conn.) collected 17 points and a block. As a team, the Owls shot 52.9% from beyond the arc and 44.8% from the field.
 
1st QUARTER (STO 20, SCSU 19)
• The Skyhawks narrowly outscored the Owls, 20-19 in the first.
• Steinauer notched four of her six first half rebounds in the opening quarter.
 
2nd QUARTER (SCSU 44, STO 35)
• Southern offense exploded in the second quarter as they outscored Stonehill 25-15.
• Smith scored eight of her 17 points in this quarter, while Pfohl collected 10 of her 24 points. A good jumper at 6:41 from Pfohl gave them the lead, which they maintained for the rest of the game.
 
3rd QUARTER (SCSU 65, STO 51)
• The Owls offense kept rolling in the third frame as they held the Skyhawks to their lowest quarter point total in the third frame.
• Steinauer tallied five of her eventual record-setting steals in this frame, while also putting 10 points on the board.
 
4th QUARTER (SCSU 73, STO 69)
• Despite being held to eight points in the final quarter, the Owls captured the 73-69 conference victory in North Easton.

• Southern defeated Stonehill College, 73-69 in North Easton, Mass.
Kiana Steinauer broke the all-time SCSU women's basketball record for steals in a game with 10, while also topping her personal-best. The previous record was set by current head coach Kate Lynch on Dec. 3, 2007 when she collected eight against Felician. Steinauer's previous career-high was tied on Jan. 9 against Merrimack when she had five. With her 16 points and 10 steals, she collected her 14th double-double of the season. 
• 
Amanda Pfohl tied her career-high in points with 24. Her previous career-high was set on Jan. 18 against Saint Anselm. With these 24 points, Pfohl has recorded double-digits points in 16 out of the Owls 18 games this season.
• For the ninth-straight game, the Owls had three-or-more players score in double-digits: Pfohl (24), Smith (17) and Steinauer (16).
 
UP NEXT
The Owls are set to host two back-to-back conference games on Wed., Jan. 23 against Franklin Pierce at 5:30 p.m., before hosting No.21 nationally ranked on Sat., Jan. 26 at 1:30 p.m. at Moore Field House.
