Owls Top Merrimack, 70-69

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball completed a come-from-behind victory over Merrimack College, 70-69 at Moore Field House. The Owls improve to 10-5 overall and 4-3 in the NE10, while the Warriors drop to 9-6 overall and 2-6 in the NE10.
 
Kiana Steinauer (Oakville, Ontario) collected her 12th double-double- of the season with 19 points and 20 rebounds, while also chipping in five assists and a game-high five steals. Amanda Pfohl (Trumbull, Conn.) collected 16 points, four assists and a steal, while Bridget Sharnick (Shelton, Conn.) notched a career-high in points with 12 on the night, going 2-for-3 from beyond the arc and 83.3% from the field. Allie Smith (Danbury, Conn.) tallied 10 points and had three assists for the Owls.
 
1st QUARTER (MER 20, SCSU 9)
• Merrimack opened the game on a 12-2 run in the first five minutes of play. The Warriors outshot the Owls 20-9 in the first quarter, which set the tone for the first half of game play.
 
2nd QUARTER (MER 33, SCSU 31)
• The Owls went on an eight-point surge in the opening minutes of the second frame. With Southern's offense rolling, they tied the game with under three minutes remaining, but Merrimack held on and took a two-point lead into halftime.
• Sharnick scored seven of her eventual 12 points in the second quarter, while Steinauer collected nine of her eventual 19.
 
3rd QUARTER (SCSU 48, MER 41)
• Steinauer tied the game 19 seconds into the third quarter and the Owls never looked back. Southern then exploded on a 13-3 run in the third quarter to gain their first lead of the game.
• Southern finished the quarter outscoring Merrimack 17-8 and with a seven-point lead.
 
4th QUARTER (SCSU 70, MER 69)
• The final quarter saw both teams trading baskets, but it was the Owls who were victorious; completing a dramatic come-from-behind win at Moore Field House for their first conference win of 2019.
 
NOTABLE FACTS
• Southern defeated Merrimack, 70-69 on Jan. 9.
• 
Kiana Steinauer notched her conference leading 12th double-double of the season with 19 points and 20 rebounds. She has collected double-digit boards in all 15 of the Owls games this season and at least 15 rebounds in 7-of-14 games. She also tied a career-high in assists with five and in steals with five.
• With her 12 points tonight, Bridget Sharnick has topped a career-high in points.
• With her 16 points in the win, 
Amanda Pfohl has recorded double-digit points in 13 of the Owls 15 games this season.
Allie Smith has collected double-digit points in five of the last six games.
• For the seventh-straight game, the Owls had three-or-more players' score in double-digits: Steinauer (19), Pfohl (16), Sharnick (12) and Smith (10).

The Owls are set to travel to Manchester, N.H. on Saturday to face Southern New Hampshire in conference play. Game time is set for a 1:30 p.m. start at Stan Spirou Field House.
