Football Tops Bentley, 31-17, For Second-Straight Win

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Southern Connecticut State University football team posted a 31-17 victory at Bentley in a Northeast 10 Conference matchup in Waltham, Mass. The Owls' second-straight victory pushes them to 2-4 overall and 2-2 in the NE10 while Bentley drops to 1-4 overall and 1-2 in conference play.

Freshman quarterback Jackson Ostrowsky (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) was 28-for-36 for 405 yards and four touchdowns in top performance of his young career. Brandon Swain-Price (Stoughton, Mass.) recorded 10 receptions for 201 yards and two touchdowns to become just the sixth wide receiver in program history to hit the 200-yards mark. Owls leading receiver Julian Chung (Franklin Square, N.Y.) also had 10 catches for 129 yards.

Defensively, Matthew Weiss (Ridge, N.Y.) had five tackles including two sacks, giving him back-to-back games with a pair of QB takedowns, while Mekhi Barnett (Stamford, Conn.) led the Owls with six tackles.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Freshman kicker Gavin Toth (Middletown, N.J.) put the Owls on the board with a 22-yard field goal to give Southern a 3-0 lead.
  • Five minutes into the second quarter, Ostrowsky found Swain-Price for a nine-yard touchdown reception to cap a 12-play, 94-yard drive.
  • Bentley's Grant Buchanan converted on a 25-yard field goal to make it 10-3 heading into the half.
  • Coming out of the half, Ostrowsky tossed his second touchdown of the afternoon when he connected with freshman Ryan Soules (Mt. Vernon, N.Y.) for a three-yard touchdown to give the Owls a 17-3 lead.
  • Moments later, Ostrowsky took the Owls down the field on a 72-yard drive that ended with Swain-Price's second touchdown of the afternoon to push Southern's lead to 24-3.
  • Bentley answered with a Noah Neville touchdown less than a minute later before both teams played it back-and-forth through the end of the third quarter and most of the fourth with the Owls' leading 24-10.
  • With five minutes to go, Jordan Artope punched the ball in for Bentley from the one-yard line to pull the Falcons within a touchdown, 24-17.
  • Southern then pushed its way down the field, eating three minutes of the clock on a seven-play drive that ended with a fake handoff to Mike Howell (Milford, Conn.) before Ostrowsky hit him in the chest for a 19-yard touchdown to put the game out of reach.
  • Navaughn Austin then picked off Bentley's Stephen Sturm to end Bentley's last bid to get back on the board.

NOTES
  • Ostrowksy's 405 yards in the air make him the fourth quarterback in Southern Connecticut history to throw for 400-yards in a game as he joins Kevin Lynch (twice), Steve Armstrong and John Esquivel as the only players to do it.
  • Of that exclusive group, Ostrowsky is the only freshman to accomplish the feat.
  • Ostrowsky's four touchdowns are also a freshman record.
  • For Swain-Price, he becomes the sixth wide receiver to post 200 yards in a game, joining Willie Epps, Jeff Cupe, Chris Ortiz, Jim Lukowiak and Ty Marshall.
  • The last wide receiver to reach 200 yards in a game was Epps who posted 254 against Merrimack in 2010.
  • Swain-Price now leads the Owls with four touchdown receptions for the year after a two-TD day against American International on Sept. 28.
  • Soules touchdown catch was his first career reception and touchdown.
  • Howell's touchdown is his first of the season and second of his career, with his first coming against Bentley in 2017.
  • Chung has had the hot hand for the Owls as of late as he passes the 100-yard receiving mark for the third-straight game. In his last three outings, of which Southern is 2-1, Chung has 27 catches for 396 yards for a 132 yard-per-game average.
  • With Izaiah Sanders also going for 117 yards last week against Frankin Pierce, Southern now has back-to-back weeks with two receivers with over 100 yards.
  • Southern has now defeated Bentley in three of its last four meetings.
