Football Falls Short In Homecoming Loss To New Haven

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University football team's come-back bid against University of New Haven fell short as the Chargers took a 23-20 decision to win the Elm City Cup at the Owls' Homecoming game. With the loss, Southern drops to 2-5 overall and 2-3 in the Northeast 10 while New Haven improves to 4-3 overall and 3-2 in conference play.

Jonmichael Bivona (Stamford, Conn.) totaled 77 yards on 17 carries with two touchdowns while freshman quarterback Jackson Ostrowsky (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) was 19-for-33 for 209 yards with one rushing touchdown. Brandon Swain-Price (Stoughton, Mass.) led all Owls receivers with five catches for 80 yards.

Defensively, the Owls were led by Rich Souffrant's seven tackles, which included ½ sack. He also tallied a pass break-up and one quarterback hurry. Anton Juncaj had six tackles, including one for a loss, while Mekhi Barnett and Matthew Weiss both had five tackles apiece. Weiss had a ½ sack and two quarterback hurries while Barnett also had an interception.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After Southern held UNH on the first drive of the game, Southern itself was forced to punt. UNH's Anthony Repolle blocked Kyle Armour's punt and Josiah Shumaker picked it up for the touchdown to put New Haven in front, 7-0.
  • On the first play of the second quarter, the Owls' offensive line blew open a hole and Bivona rambled for 37 yards to tie the game at 7-7.
  • With just under four minutes to play in the half, UNH running back Shamar Logan broke off a 35-yard run to give the visiting Chargers a 14-7 lead heading into halftime.
  • Early in the half, Repolle blocked Armour's punt for the second time in the game, this time resulting in a safety to push New Haven's lead to 16-7.
  • Chris Liggio the scored on a run from five yards out to give the Chargers a 23-7 lead with six minutes to go in the third quarter.
  • Southern made it a game when Bivona ran a delay out of the Owls' backfield and stepped across the Chargers goal line from 4 yards out to cut UNH's lead to 23-13 after a failed two-point conversion attempt.
  • Midway through the fourth, Ostrowsky led the Owls on a nine-play, 63-yard drive that ended with the first-year signal caller punching it in from a yard out to make it 23-20 in the closing minutes.
  • On the Chargers next drive, Vance Upham punched the ball from Logan's grasp and pounced on it to recover the fumble. Facing a 4th-and-long after a holding penalty on the Owls, freshman kicker Gavin Toth's 46-yard field goal attempt with 1:24 on the clock was wide right. New Haven was able to run the clock out to secure the win.

NOTES
  • With his 209 passing yards, Ostrowsky eclipse the 1,000-yard mark and sits at 1,163 through the first four games of his career.
  • The last SCSU freshman quarterback to pass for 1,000 yards in a season was Robert Nittolo in 2015.
  • Bivona's two-touchdown day gives him a team-leading five for the season.
  • It also marks the fourth-straight game in which the Owls have had a player score multiple touchdowns as Bivona follows Brandon Swain-Price against Bentley, Julian Chung against Franklin Pierce and Swain-Price against AIC.
  • After opening the season 6-for-15 in the Red Zone in their first four games, the Owls have now converted on 15 of their last 16 possessions inside their opponents' 20-yard line.
  • Mekhi Barnett now leads the Owls with 36 tackles for the season, with 16 coming in his last three games. Barnett's interception was also his first of the year and the fifth of the season for the Owls.
  • Matthew Weiss leads Southern with 4 ½ sacks, all coming in his last three games. Weiss also leads Southern with six QB hurries.
  • Vance Upham's fumble recovery puts him in the lead on the Owls' defense in take-aways after also recording two interceptions this season.
