Football Falls To Saint Anselm, 25-24

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Southern Connecticut State University football team lost a back-and-forth battle at Saint Anselm, 25-24, in a Northeast 10 matchup at Grappone Stadium. With the loss, the Owls drop to 2-6 overall and 2-4 in the NE10 while Saint Anselm improves to 3-5 overall and 3-2 in the conference.

Brandon Swain-Price (Stoughton, Mass.) had 11 receptions for 196 yards and three touchdowns while freshman quarterback Jackson Ostrowsky (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) was 28-for-56 for 411 yards with three touchdowns for his second 400-yard game of the season. Jaylynn Cundiff (Brockton, Mass.) had nine receptions for 159 yards, including a 57-yard reception. Running back Octovio Thomas (Brockton, Mass.) totaled 10 carries for 68 yards. Gavin Toth (Middletown, N.J.) also hit a 41-yard field goal.

On defense, Dominick Hasan (Jersey City, N.J.) led the Owls with 10 tackles while Ruben Morillo (Lawrence, Mass.) finished with eight. Navaugh Austin (Bridgeport, Conn.) had seven tackles and an interception. Rich Souffrant (Stratford, Conn.) added two sacks to give him a team-leading five for the year.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Freshman kicker Gavin Toth gave Southern a 3-0 lead with his fourth field goal of the season from 41 yards out.
  • Saint Anselm at the end of the first quarter with a five-play, 80-yard drive that ended with a Shawn Donovan 17-yard touchdown reception from Eric Fairweather
  • Early in the second quarter, a 57-yard reception by Jaylynn Cundiff set the Owls up in the Hawks' red zone. Ostrowsky then connected with Swain-Price on three-straight receptions, with the third registering as a four-yard touchdown reception to put Southern on top, 10-6.
  • The Owls pushed their lead to 17-6 with a nine-play, 66-yard drive that saw Ostrowsky hook-up with Swain-Price on a 22-yard touchdown.
  • Fairweather and Donovan connected again, this time for a 19-yard touchdown to cut the Owls' lead to 17-12 heading into halftime.
  • Coming out of the half, Saint Anselm got back on the board on its first possession, with Fairweather running in a five-yard score to cap a 66-yard drive.
  • The back-and-forth battled continued with Octovio Thomas rambling for 31 yards for the longest rush of the day that set up the Owls for their third touchdown of the day. After Thomas put the Owls on the Saint Anselm 15-yard line, Ostrowsky shook-off back-to-back incompletions to throw a 15-yard strike in the back of the Hawks' end zone to Swain-Price for the receivers third score of the day as Southern took a 24-19 lead.
  • Saint Anselm punched back with Fairweather finding Donovan for the third time in the game for a 19-yard touchdown as Saint Anselm took a 25-24 lead.

NOTES
  • Gavin Toth's 41-yard field goal in the first half was the longest by an Owls kicker since Jeffrey Groth converted on a 43-yard attempt against LIU-Post on Nov. 1, 2014.
  • With two touchdowns against Saint Anselm, Brandon Swain-Price has now accomplished that feat in three games this season. The last Owls' receiver to score multiple touchdowns in multiple games in the same season was Devante Jenkins who had five multiple-touchdown games in 2015.
  • Swain-Price also becomes the first Owls receiver to catch three touchdowns in a game since Jenkins against American International on Nov. 14, 2015.
  • Ostrowsky becomes the first Owls quarterback in program history to throw for 400 yards twice in one season. Kevin Lynch is the only other Southern signal caller to do it twice in a career.
