Football Falls To Stonehill, 41-20

EASTON, Mass – The Southern Connecticut State University football team lost to Stonehill, 41-20, in a Northeast 10 Conference matchup in Easton, Mass. With the loss, Southern drops to 2-7 overall and 2-5 in NE10 play while Stonehill improves to 5-3 overall and 4-2 in conference play.

Freshman quarterback Jackson Ostrowsky (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) passed for 369 yards on 18-of-43 passing with three touchdowns, with 329 yards coming in the second half. Izaiah Sanders (Stamford, Conn.) led the Owls in receiving with five receptions for 170 yards and a touchdown while Brandon Swain-Price (Stoughton, Mass.) had six receptions for 114 yards and a touchdown. Freshman John Amodeo (Wyckoff, N.J.) also scored his first collegiate touchdown with a 35-yard catch for a score.

Defensively, Kyle Armour (Newington, Conn.) led the Owls with seven tackles, while also handling the punting duties for the Owls. Armour had a season-high eight punts for 328 yards including a season-best 57-yard punt. Rich Souffrant (Stratford, Conn.) also had seven tackles, including a sack, and also recovered a fumble and broke-up a pass. Mitch McDunnah (Columbia, Conn.) had seven tackles and 1.5 sacks while Anton Juncaj (Port Jervis, N.Y.) had 2.5 sacks and forced a fumble.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Stonehill took a 7-0 lead just four minutes into the game when Anton Stoneking connected with Casey Gervais on a 15-yard touchdown pass.
  • Matt Haite converted on a 26-yard field goal to give the Skyhawks a 10-0 lead in the closing minute of the first quarter.
  • Stoneking scored on a nine-yard scramble to give Stonehill a 17-0 lead before passing for his second touchdown of the first half on a 39-yard pass to Zac Pungitore.
  • Haite then converted on a 32-yard attempt to give the Skyhawks a 27-0 lead heading into halftime.
  • Coming out of the half, Southern stopped Stonehill on its first drive as Juncaj nailed Stoneking to force a fumble that was recovered by Souffrant. Swain-Price put the Owls on the board with a 35-yard touchdown reception before Gavin Toth's extra-point attempt was blocked to cut Stonehill's lead to 27-6.
  • After Stonehill's Justin Felder broke free for a 65-yard touchdown run, Ostrowksy delivered a 35-yard strike to Amodeo to cap a nine-play, 75-yard drive.
  • Felder scored again on a one-yard run to push Stonehill's lead to 41-13, before Izaiah Sanders scored on a 90-yard touchdown pass from Ostrowksy.

NOTES
  • Sanders' 90-yard touchdown reception was the second-longest in program history, just behind Willie Epps' 97-yard catch against Merrimack in a 49-32 win on Nov. 6, 2010.
  • Swain-Price has now posted 100-yard receiving performances in three of his last four games played, with a touchdown catch in four of his last six.
  • Swain-Price currently leads the Owls in catches (43), yards (706), yards per game (88.25) and touchdowns (8).
  • Ostrowsky now has 14 touchdown passes, in six games, for the year, which are the most in a single season since Robert Nittolo passed for 19 in 2015.
  • Armour's 57-yard punt was the Owls longest since Mike McNally hung a 61-yard punt against Merrimack on Oct. 21, 2017.
  • The Owls' five sacks against Stonehill are the most in a game this year for the Owls.
  • Souffrant leads the Owls with six sacks this season, and has recorded on in each of the last three games.
  • Juncaj's forced fumble was his team-leading second of the season. He's also second on the team in quarterback hurries (4) with 35 tackles and 3.5 sacks.
  • McDunnah posted season-bests in tackles (7) and sacks (1.5).

Southern will enjoy the bye week before closing out the season at Jess Dow Field on Nov. 16 when it hosts Pace at 12 p.m. for Senior Day.
