Women's Basketball Doubles Up Bloomfield, 100-51

BRIDGEPORT, Conn – The Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team defeated Bloomfield College, 100-51, in a non-conference matchup at Harvey Hubbell to close Bridgeport Crossover Challenge. The Owls improve to 2-0 on the season, while the Purple Knight fall to 0-2.
 
Senior Imani Wheeler (Dumfries, Va.) led the offensive charge in the second and final game of the weekend for the Owls as six players scored in double-figures. Wheeler had a game-high 20 points shooting 8-for-10 from the field and 2-for-2 from beyond the arc, bringing in six assists and two steals. Senior Kiana Steinauer (Oakville, Ontario) provided 15 points, six rebounds, two steals and two assists, shooting 7-for-9 from the field. Freshman Amani Boston (Dorcester, Mass.) also added 15 points, while redshirt-freshman Alexa Kellner (Stamford, Conn.) scored 13 points, freshman Blake Greer (Victoria, Minn.) scored 12 points, and redshirt-junior  Jessica Fressle (Levittown, N.Y.) scored 10 points.

How It Happened
  • Southern dominated in the first three minutes of play on a 10-2 run and finished the first quarter 11-3 run as they took a 25-14 lead into the second quarter.
  • The Owls again had a big quarter, outscoring Bloomfield 29-16, and took a 54-30 lead into halftime.
  • Southern began the second half on a 11-3 run to stretch their lead to 65-33. They would 82-45 lead at the end of the quarter. 
  • Southern stretched their lead to 91-48, then ended the game by going on a 9-3 run. They allowed just six points in the final quarter. 
 
Notes
  • Kiana Steinauer is now up 1,029 career points, ranking 19th all-time in program history.  
  • Southern had six players score in double-digits for the since time since Dec. 13, 2013 against Post University, when Keshia PrimoMaria WeselyjNicole Grossbard, Mariah HanktonSydni Lester, and Taylor McLaughlin all scored at least 10 points. 
  • The last time Southern scored 100 or more points in a single game was on Dec. 14, 2014 when they scored 100 against Post University.
  • The Owls 49 point victory is their largest margin of victory since Dec. 3, 2007, when they defeated Felician University by 66, winning by a score of 106-40. 
  • The Owls have started off 2-0 in back-to-back seasons.
