Women's Basketball Takes Down Queens, 63-51

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team defeated Queens College, 63-51 at Moore Field House for their third-straight win. The Owls improve to 3-0 on the season, while the Knights fall to 1-2.
 
Senior Kiana Steinauer (Oakville, Ontario) led the charge for Southern Connecticut collecting her second double-double of the year with 18 points and 12 rebounds, shooting 9-for-14 while bringing in nine steals and three assists. Senior Aaliyah Walker (Toronto, Ontario) tallied 15 points and six rebounds, while senior Imani Wheeler (Dumfries, Va.) posted 10 points three steals and two assists in the win.
 
How It Happened
  • After the score was tied 4-4 in the opening minutes, Southern outscored Queens 21-4 during the eight and a half minutes to lead 25-12
  • Southern opened the second quarter on 10-1 run to take a 35-13 lead, their largest lead of the game. The Owls would then take a 44-27 lead into halftime.
  • Queens would cut the lead to 48-38 with 3:20 left in the third quarter, but the Owls would respond with a 7-2 run to take a 55-40 lead in the fourth.
  • The Owls would hold Queens to 11 points in the final quarter to win 63-51. 
  
Notes
  • Kiana Steinauer is now up 1,047 career points, ranking 19th all-time in program history. She has been in double-digit point totals in all three games thus far.
  • Steinauer's 32 rebounds this season puts her 25 away from breaking the 1,000 mark in rebounds. She previously broke 1,000 points in the Owls game against Bridgeport on Nov. 9.
  • The Owls have started off 3-0 in back-to-back seasons. 
  • Alexa Kellner's two blocked shots were a season-high.
  • Southern Connecticut's 15 steals were a season-high. Their previous season-high was 12 on Nov. 9 at Bridgeport. 15 steals were also a 2018-19 season-high set on February 6, 2019 against New Haven.
