Women's Basketball Defeats UDC, 64-51

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team defeated the University of the District of Columbia, 64-51. The Owls improve to 4-0 overall, while the Firebirds fall to 1-3.
 
Senior Kiana Steinauer (Oakville, Ontario) collected her third double-double of the season with 18 points and 17 rebounds, shooting 6-for-13 from the floor and adding seven assists and three steals. Senior Imani Wheeler (Dumfries, Va.) put on a solid show for her hometown crowd as she collected 14 points shooting 6-for-8 from the floor, while redshirt junior Jessica Fressle (Levittown, N.Y.) had 12 points, shooting 5-for-9 from the floor with four rebounds.
 

How It Happened
  • The game started off as a back-and-forth scoring affair, but the Owls finished the first quarter on an 8-0 run and lead by seven at the end of the first ten.
  • It was a similar second quarter as the two teams traded points until three minutes left when the Owls picked up their offense and finished on 6-1 run.
  • UDC picked up momentum in the third quarter going on a 6-0 run. Southern Connecticut counterattacked and finished the third on an 8-2 run, leading by 16.
  • Southern Connecticut kicked off the fourth quarter on a 10-1 run and held their largest lead of the game by 24 points.
 
Game Notes
  • Senior Kiana Steinauer's 18 points and 17 rebounds was her third double-double of the year. She has also been in double-digit point totals in all four games thus far.
  • Imani Wheeler collected her fourth-straight double-digit point game with 14 points.
  • The last time the Owls won their first four games was during the 2009-10 season against Bridgeport, Le Moyne, Post and Pace to open the season.

Player Notes
  • Kiana Steinauer is now up 1,065 career points, ranking 18th all-time in program history.
  • Steinauer's 50 rebounds this season puts her seven away from breaking the 1,000 mark in rebounds. She previously broke 1,000 points in the Owls game against Bridgeport on Nov. 9.
