Tomas Terrugi Scores Twice To Lead Men's Soccer To 4-3 Win Against Le Moyne

NEW HAVEN, Conn. –  The Southern Connecticut State University men's soccer team defeated Le Moyne, 4-3, in a Northeast 10 Conference matchup at Jess Dow Field in New Haven, Conn. With the win, the Owls conclude the 2019 season with an overall record of 5-7-4 and a conference record of 4-6-2. Le Moyne drops to 11-5-1 overall and 7-4-1 in NE10 play.

Tomas Terrugi (Tornquist, Argentina) scored twice, including a penalty kick, while Francisco Roldan (Malaga, Spain) and Blaise Haba (West Haven, Conn.) also scored for the Owls. Ignasi Perez (Barcelona, Spain) and Devante Teixeira (Boston, Mass.) both had assists in the Owls' win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Southern jumped out to a 1-0 lead just under eight minutes into the game when they were awarded a free kick from just above the box. Ignasi Perez bent a pass over the crowd in front of the Dolphins' goal where Francisco Roldan leaped above his defender and headed the pass past Le Moyne keeper Josh Mahr to give the Owls a 1-0 lead.
  • Le Moyne answered with back-to-back in a span of three minutes midway through the half, both coming from Brandon Mimas. His first goal came when he stepped around an Owls defender and then tucked a shot inside the near-side post to tie the game at 1-1. In the 23rd minute, Mimas struck from the other side, this time drawing Owls goalkeeper Ian Shannon to the near post before sliding a shot across the box to the opposite post.
  • With under two minutes to play in the half, Tomas Terrugi collected a loose ball in front of the Le Moyne goal and fired a shot through traffic that found the back of the Dolphins' goal to send the game tied at 2-2 heading into the half.
  • Early in the second half, Terrugi was taken down with a clear look at the Dolphins' goal, resulting in a penalty kick. Terrugi's blast to the lower-right corner found space and gave the Owls a 3-2 lead.
  • Blaisa Haba then took a stretch pass from Devante Teixeira, sprinted past his defender and popped in his third goal of the season to give Southern a 4-2 lead.
  • Le Moyne's Tom Henne scored Le Moyne's third goal of the game to cut the Owls' lead in half before Southern clamped down and ended the Dolphins' threat.

NOTES
  • Southern's two goals against Le Moyne were its most scored in a single game since a 2-0 win against Stonehill on Sept. 28, a span of seven games.
  • Roldan's goal was his team-leading fourth of the season, and his first since the Owls' win against Stonehill.
  • Terrugi's goal was his second of the year and first since Sept. 11.
  • Terrugi's goal off the penalty shot was Southern's first since Ignasi Perez scored one as a freshman in 2017.
  • He's also the first Southern Connecticut player with two goals in a game since Teixeira had a pair against Southern New Hampshire on Sept. 26, 2018.
  • Terrugi is also the first freshman to score twice in a game since Chae Brangman did it against Saint Anselm on Oct. 18, 2014.
  • For the Owls, it is their first game with four goals scored since scoring five in a shutout win against Nyack on Oct 6, 2018.
