Men's Basketball Falls To Post In Season Opener

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. –  The Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team fell Post University, 69-64, in a non-conference matchup at the Bridgeport Crossover Challenge to open up the season. The Owls fall to 0-1 while the Eagles improve to 1-0.

Redshirt-junior Isaiah Boissard (Walden, N.Y.)  led Southern with 16 points in his Owls debut, while Taurus Adams II (Milwaukee, Wisc.) had 15 points and 11 rebounds to begin his senior season. Freshman Lyron Bennett (Boston, Mass.) added eight points and seven rebounds in his collegiate debut.

How It Happened
  • The first 11 minutes of the game featured three ties and two lead changes, but the Owls took a 22-16 lead with 8:19 remaining courtesy of a Zack Penn (New Hartford, Conn.) turnaround jumper.

  • Post responded by going on an 18-10 run to end the first-half, heading into the break with a 34-32 lead.
  • Post stretched their lead to 46-39 with 13:32 left, but Southern went on an 19-2 run to take a 58-48 lead with 5:35 remaining, their largest lead of the game.
  • Post ended the game on a 21-6 to seal the victory.

Notes
  • Adams recorded his fourth career double-double during the game. Dating back to last season, he has now recorded a double-double in two consecutive games, as he capped off his junior season with 12 points and 10 rebounds against Saint Anselm on March 3, 2019.
  • Adams' double-double makes it two consecutive seasons an Owls player has recorded a double-double to open the year, as Isaiah McLeod recorded one last year against Post in the season opener with 21 points and 10 rebounds.
  • Levar Allen (Richmond, Va.) and Lyron Bennett become the first freshman to start a season opening game since Ulyen Coleman (Brockton, Mass.) in the 2017-2018 season against Saint Rose.
  • Allen and Bennett also became the first pair of freshman to start a season opening game since Lucas Van Nes and Stefon Williams in the 2013-2014 season opener against Molloy.
