Steinauer Reaches Milestone As Women's Basketball Defeats Bridgeport In Season Opener, 71-55

BRIDGEPORT, Conn –  The Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team defeated University of Bridgeport, 71-55, in a non-conference matchup at Harvey Hubbell to open up the season at the Bridgeport Crossover Challenge. The Owls improve to 1-0 on the season, while the Purple Knight fall to 0-1.
 
Senior Kiana Steinauer (Oakville, Ontario) became the 22nd player in program history to score 1,000 points, as she tallied 18 points and grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds to kick off the 2019-20 season. Redshirt-junior Jessica Fressle (Levittown, N.Y.) led Southern with 21 points, while senior Imani Wheeler (Dumfries, Va.) added 14 points and six steals. Freshman Alexa Kellner (Stamford, Conn.) had 11 points and six rebounds in her collegiate debut. 

How It Happened
  • Southern took 12-3 lead during the first four minutes of the game, but Bridgeport ended the quarter on a 19-8 run to take a 22-20 lead.
  • Bridgeport capitalized and took a 38-37 lead into the second half.
  • The Purple Knights stretched their lead to 49-45 during the third quarter, but Southern ended the quarter on a 7-2 run and took 52-51 lead into the final period. 
  • Southern extended their lead 61-55 during the first five minutes of the quarter, then went on a 10-0 run to end the game, holding the Purple Knights without a point during the final five minutes of the game. 
 
Notes
  • Kiana Steinauer is now up 1,014 career points, ranking 20th all time in program history.  
  • For the second consecutive year, Steinauer recorded a double-double in the season opening game. She had a NCAA Division II-leading 24 double-doubles last season. 
  • Imani Wheeler tied a career-high in steals with six, last done on Jan. 15, 2019 against Saint Anselm. 
  • Jessica Fressle became the first Southern player to make 10 free throws in a game since Steinauer made 11 free throws against Franklin Pierce on Jan. 23, 2019. 
  • Southern had four players score in double-digits for the since time since Jan. 26, 2019 against Bentley, when Wheeler, Aaliyah WalkerAllie Smith, and Amanda Pfohl all scored at least 10 points. 
  • The Owls have won a season opening game in back-to-back seasons, as they defeated Post University 74-64 to kick off last year's Bridgeport Crossover Challenge. 
  • After not beating Bridgeport since 2015, Southern Connecticut has taken victories over the Purple Knights in back-to-back years.
