Women's Basketball Seals Victory At Saint Rose, 51-38

ALBANY, N.Y. – The Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team defeated the College of Saint Rose, 51-38 at Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium. The Owls improve to 5-4 overall and 1-3 in the Northeast 10, while the Golden Knights fall to 3-6 overall and 0-5 in the NE10.
 
Redshirt junior Jessica Fressle (Levittown, N.Y.) was the force behind the Owls' win collecting 21 points, five rebounds and three steals through 37 minutes of play. Senior Aaliyah Walker (Toronto, Ontario) had a solid showing for Southern, collecting a career-high 12 rebounds, seven points, an assist and a steal. Junior transfer Ednaija Lassiter (Boston, Mass.) picked up ten points, eight rebounds, two assists and a steal.

How It Happened
  • Both teams exchanged baskets during the first five and a half minutes of the first quarter, but Walker made free-throw that gave Southern the lead, then Fressle knocked down a three-pointer to extend the lead to 10-6 with 4:16 left in the quarter.
  • Saint Rose made back-to-back layups to tie the game, but Wheeler gave Southern a 12-10 lead right before the end of the first.
  • Wheeler struck again to open the second quarter and gave Southern a 14-10 lead, their largest of the first half. Saint Rose's offense heated up and they ended the quarter on a 9-4 run and hit a jumper near the buzzer taking a 23-31 lead into halftime.
  • Southern scored two-consecutive baskets regaining the lead to start the third quarter, but Saint Rose quickly tied the game back up at 25 with 4:45 remaining in the frame. Fressle hit another three-pointer to give Southern a 28-25 lead with 3:12 to go in the quarter, but Saint Rose scored on a layup and two free-throws to take a 29-28 lead into the final quarter.
  • Lassiter went on a personal 5-0 run to start the fourth quarter, draining a three-pointer to give Southern a 31-29 lead, then scoring in the paint to extend the Owls' lead to five. After a Saint Rose basket, Southern went on an 18-2 run, highlighted by seven points from Fressle, and took a 51-33 lead with 1:24 remaining. The Owls went on to secure a 51-38 win, their first win four games.
 
Notes
  • Aaliyah Walker notched a career-high 12 rebounds, her first double-digit rebound game of the season. Her previous career-high was set on Nov. 25, 2018 when she had eight rebounds against Queens College.
  • Ten points is a season-high for Ednaija Lassiter. Her previous season-high was six points against Le Moyne.
  • The Owls had 73 field goal attempts against Saint Rose, which are the most attempts since SCSU faced Bloomfield on Nov. 11 when they attempted 64.
  • Southern's 43 team rebounds is their second highest single-game total this season. Their 45 rebounds against the District of Columbia on Nov. 16 is their current game-high.

The Owls will return home to face Chestnut Hill College on Saturday, Dec. 14 for a 1:30 p.m. nonconference matchup at Moore Field House.
