Women's Basketball Topped By New Haven, 52-48

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team fell to the University of New Haven, 52-48 at Charger Gymnasium. The Owls fall to 4-3 overall and 0-2 in the Northeast 10, while Chargers improve to 5-1 overall and 2-1 in the NE10.
 
Senior Imani Wheeler (Dumfries, Va.) continued to lead the Owls offense tallying a game-high 13 points, while chipping in four steals and three assists. Wheeler also shot 5-for-10 from the floor and 3-for-6 from the field. Redshirt freshman Alexa Kellner (Stamford, Conn.) notched 11 points, five steals, five rebounds and two assists. Redshirt junior Jessica Fressle (Levittown, N.Y.) tallied 12 points and two steals, while senior Paula Tattari (Keruva, Finland) grabbed seven boards, two blocks and a steal in the loss for Southern Connecticut.

How It Happened
  • New Haven got off to a quick start, leading 9-2 seven minutes into the first quarter, with the Chargers carrying an 11-6 lead into the second quarter.
  • Both squads picked up the offense in the second quarter, but the Chargers took a 23-11 lead with 5:16 remaining in the half. New Haven led 28-16 at halftime.
  • Southern opened the third quarter on an 11-3 run, highlighted by two three-pointers from Kellner and a three-pointer from Tattari that cut New Haven's lead to 31-27 with 4:42 remaining in the quarter.
  • Southern kept up with the Chargers pace, ending the third quarter trailing just 38-32. Fressle scored five points over the final three minutes, including a three-pointer before the third quarter buzzer.
  • New Haven extended their lead to 41-34 with 8:43 remaining, but Southern went on a 12-5 run to tie the game at 46 with 2:27 remaining in the game.
  • Wheeler hit back-to-back three-pointers to help cut the deficit within one possession, while Kellner hit a three-pointer that brought the Owls within one. Aaliyah Walker (Toronto, Ontario) sunk a free throw that tied the game.
  • New Haven would end the game going 4-6 from the free-throw line, helping secure a 52-48 win.

Notes
  • Imani Wheeler collected her seventh-straight double-digit point game.
  • Wheeler had tallied three-or-more steals in each of her last three games and in five of the Owls seven games this season.
  • Alexa Kellner's five steals tonight was a career-high. Her previous career-high was on Nov. 9 against Bridgeport when she had two.
  • Southern's 16 steals against New Haven was a season-high. Their previous season high was on Nov. 13 against Queens College when they 15.
