Owls Stung By AIC

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team fell to American International College, 78-65 at Moore Field House. The Owls drop to 13-12 overall and 7-10 in the Northeast 10, while the Yellow Jackets improve 14-11 overall and 9-8 NE10.
 
Early in regulation, Amanda Pfohl (Trumbull, Conn.) knocked down a pair of three-pointers to give her 91 for the season, breaking Kristen Breen's 19-year old single-season record of 90 set during the 1998-99 season. Imani Wheeler (Dumfries, Va.) tied a career high in points with 23, while adding three assists and two steals. Kiana Steinauer (Oakville, Ontario) collected her 20thdouble-double of the year with 14 points and 12 rebounds with six steals, while Aaliyah Walker (Toronto, Ontario) collected 11 points, five rebounds and two assists.
 
1stQuarter (SCSU 20, AIC 12)
• The Owls went on a 12-3 run late in the first quarter, while Pfohl hit her record-breaking three-pointer with 1:51 remaining. Southern outscored AIC, 20-12.
• Wheeler collected nine of her eventual 23 points in the first frame, while Steinauer collected five of her 12 rebounds.
 
2ndQuarter (SCSU 33, AIC 29)
• Despite the Yellow Jackets outscoring the Owls, 17-13 in the second quarter, Southern took a four-point lead heading into halftime.
• Steinauer collected three of her six steals in the second frame.
 
3rdQuarter (AIC 52, SCSU 43)
• AIC came out strong in the third quarter as they held Southern to 10 points, while scoring 23 to take a nine-point leading heading into the final frame.
 
4thQuarter (AIC 78, SCSU 65)
• The Yellow Jackets strong second half with two back-to-back 20 point quarters was the difference-maker as AIC took a 78-65 victory at Moore Field House.
• Steinauer put up five points and four of her remaining steals, while Wheeler chipped in eight of her 23 in the final frame.
 
Facts
•  Kiana Steinauer collected her NCAA Division II and conference-leading 20thdouble-double of the season with 14 points and 12 rebounds.
•  Imani Wheeler tied a career-high in points with 23. Her previous career-high last came on Dec. 30 against Dominican.
• The Owls had three players in double-digit points led by Wheeler, who had 23, Steinauer with 14 and Walker with 11.
 
Up Next
The Owls head to Le Moyne on Sat., Feb. 16 for a 1 p.m. matchup with the Dolphins, who are currently sitting in first place in the Southwest Division.
