Lener Paces Owls In Season Opening Twinbill

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Junior Julia Lener (Danbury, Conn.) went 5-for-7 on the day as the Southern Connecticut State University softball team dropped its opening twinbill against Northeast 10 opponent, Le Moyne, 7-4 and West Virginia State University, 5-1.

Recap vs. Le Moyne
• The Dolphins came out swinging in the first inning as they scored one run off a single before Le Moyne's Chelsie Delperuto hit a three-run home run that gave them a commanding four-run lead.
• In a scramble, Lener advanced to second on a throwing error and sophomore Jayden Delaporta scored to get the Owls on the board.
• Freshman Liz DeRosa (Hudson, N.H.) hit the first double of her collegiate career to center field, which scored Lener and split the Dolphins lead in half, 4-2.
• DeRosa's next at-bat in the sixth inning saw her ground out to second and allowed Lener to score her second run of the game, which put the Owls within one.
• Lener tied the game in the sixth inning with a single to right center field that scored freshman Ally Petrella (Willington, Conn.).
• Le Moyne's Peyton Bellrose hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh to give the Dolphins their first victory of the 2019 season.
 
Top Performers
Julia Lener went 3-for-4 including a double with two runs and one RBI.
Liz DeRosa went 2-for-3 with two RBI including one double and a stolen base.

• WVSU opened the scoring in the second inning off a double to left field.
• The Yellow Jackets added three runs in the fourth inning off a hit and a field error, 4-0.
• Lener got the Owls on the board with a double to left field that scored junior Sara Buscetto (Waterford, Conn.).
• West Virginia added their final run in the sixth inning with a homer to center field.

• Lener led the Owls offense as she went 2-for-3 with one RBI in the 5-1 loss.
