Softball Splits Doubleheader Against Clarion, Felician

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -The Southern Connecticut State University split a pair of games on Feb. 16 with a 10-6 win over Clarion and a 13-5 loss over Felician.

Recap vs. Clarion
• The Owls opened the scoring in game one as Sara Buscetto (Waterford, Conn.) scored on an error. Julia Lener (Danbury, Conn.) continued her hot streak as she doubled to score Jayden Delaporta (Mystic, Conn.), 2-0. Lener scored on a ground out, while Jacqueline Dumont (Nashua, N.H.) stole home to add two more runs for the Owls. Southern Connecticut finished the first inning up by four.
• Southern increased their lead in the third inning as Liz DeRosa (Hudson, N.H.) launched a double to score Dumont.
• DeRosa's cycle would come full circle as she scored on an error that gave the Owls a six-run lead.
• Freshman Ivy Geloso (Beacon Falls, Conn.) earned a walk that forced Cailey Botteon (Moodus, Conn.) home, while Delaporta also earned a base on balls that gave the Owls a commanding 8-0 lead.
• Clarion attempted to fight back with four runs scored in the fourth, but sophomore transfer, Kelsey White had other plans in the fifth as she launched a solo home run, her first in an Owls uniform, 9-4 SCS. Dumont then knocked her first collegiate home run in the sixth inning that gave Southern Connecticut a six-run lead heading into the final inning.
 •A single in the seventh scored two for Clarion, but the Owls balanced attack was the difference maker in their 10-6 win over Clarion.
• Jazmyn Martinez (Middletown, N.Y.) pitched four innings with four strikeouts, while senior Madison Feshler (Middletown, Conn.) entered the game to pitch the remaining three innings and earn the save.
 
Top Performers
• Jacqueline Dumont went 2-for-4 including a solo home run, three runs scored, one stolen base and one RBI.
• Kelsey White went 2-for-3 with a solo home run, two runs scored and one RBI.
• Sara Buscetto went 2-for-4 with one run scored and a stolen base, while Liz DeRosa notched one run, one stolen base and two RBI.
• Jazmyn Martinez earned her first win of 2019, while Madison Feshler earned the first save of the season.
 
 
Recap vs. Felician
• Felician opened the game with a run in the first inning. They added another run in the third inning to increase their lead to two, but Southern counterattacked in the fourth inning as Kailey Westington scored on an error.
• The Golden Falcons added seven fifth-inning runs to take a commanding 9-1 lead.
• Lener knocked in Geloso off a single to center field in the fifth inning to help the Owls chip away at the Falcons lead.
• DeRosa singled to right field that scored Delaporta, while Lener eventually scored off an error by the catcher, 9-4 Felician.
• Felican added a run in the sixth, while Buscetto scored on a wild pitch in the same inning to keep the score within five.
• The Golden Falcons added three seventh-inning runs to extend their lead to eight and allowed them to capture a 13-5 victory over the Owls.
 
Top Performers
• Liz DeRosa went 1-for-3 with an RBI.
• Sara Buscetto had a run and a stolen base.
 
Up Next
The Owls next matchup isn't until March 10 when they'll face Dominican College in Osceola, Fla.
