MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Southern Connecticut State University baseball team rolled to a 17-9 win against Mercy College in a non-conference matchup at Griffith Field at The Ripken Experience facility in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The win was the Owls' second of the day after they defeated Molloy, 15-5, earlier in the afternoon. The Owls improve to 3-4 overall while Mercy goes to 1-6 on the year.
The Owls stormed from behind and erased a 6-2 deficit to tie the game at 7-7 in the seventh inning. The Southern offense exploded for nine runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to grab a 17-8 lead before Mercy tacked on its final run in its final at-bats.
Tyler Criscuolo (Branford, Conn.) led the Owls' barrage with a 4-for-5 day with two RBI and two runs scored.
Jim Palmer (Milford, Conn.) drove in four runs on the day while
Mac Finnegan (Old Saybrook, Conn.) and
Connor Redahan (Greenwich, Conn.) both collected two hits and drove in two runs, each, with both of Redahan's hits going for doubles.
Jim Palmer (Milford, Conn.) posted a three-RBI outing while Cameron O'Toole (Grafton, Mass.) also drove in a pair of runs.
Freshman
Tommy Hughes (Newington, Conn.) picked up his first career win after holding Mercy to two runs over the game's final two innings. Hughes recorded three strikeouts in his first career appearance.
Brandon Rentas (Wallingford, Conn.) pitched 3 1/3, allowing three runs – two earned – while scattering five hits.
Jared Henry (West Stockbridge, Mass.) struck out seven in 3 2/3 in relief.
NOTES
- The Owls' seven doubles are the most since Apr. 30, 2017 when they matched that number against American International.
- Southern's 17 runs are the most in a game since it defeated Molloy, 17-0, on Feb. 25, 2017.
- With its 15-run game against Mercy earlier in the day, the Owls have now scored 15-or-more runs in consecutive games for the first time since 2010 when they did it against Felician in a 19-9 win and against against Bloomfield in a 19-1 win in their next outing.
