Owls Drop Decision To New Haven

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball squad dropped a 61-47 decision to crosstown rival and Northeast 10 foe, the University of New Haven at Charger Gymnasium. The Owls drop to 12-11 overall and 6-9 in the NE10, while New Haven improves to 14-9 overall and 7-8 in the NE10.
 
Junior Kiana Steinauer (Oakville, Ontario) collected her 18th double-double of the year with 12 points and 19 rebounds, while adding three steals and an assist. Junior Imani Wheeler (Dumfries, Va.) tallied 16 points, two assists and two steals, while senior Amanda Pfohl (Trumbull, Conn.) notched 15 points and tied a career-high in steals with five on the night. Allie Smith (Danbury, Conn.) added a career-high four steals and three assists for the Owls.
 
1st Quarter (SCS 16, UNH 14)
• UNH opened the game on a 10-2 run, but Southern counterattacked with a 14-5 run over the last six minutes of the frame to take the lead.
• Pfohl hit 3-of-4 three-pointers during the run to ignite the Owls offense, while Steinauer collected six of her eventual 11 first half rebounds.
 
2nd Quarter (UNH 31, SCS 30)
• The Owls led by five in the second quarter, but New Haven hit a three-pointer with no time remaining on the clock to give them a one-point lead heading into halftime.
• Pfohl notched six of her 15 points in the second frame off of two three-pointers.
 
3rd Quarter (UNH 43, SCS 37)
• The Chargers outscored the Owls in the third quarter 12-7, while going on a 6-0 run to widen the scoring gap. They led by six points at the end of the quarter.
• Pfohl collected two of her eventual five steals in the third frame.
 
4th Quarter (UNH 61, SCS 47)
• A balanced attack from the Chargers proved to be the difference-maker as the Chargers took the 61-47 victory in West Haven, Conn.
• Steinauer collected six of her 12 points in the final frame.
 
Facts
Kiana Steinauer collected her NCAA DII and conference-leading 18th double-double of the year with 12 points and 19 rebounds. She has collected double-digit rebounds in four of the last five games for the Owls.
• With 15 points, 
Amanda Pfohl has collected double-digit points in 21 of the Owls 23 games this season.
• With five three-pointers, Pfohl became the third player in SCSU history to nail down 80 three-pointers in a single season. She currently leads NCAA Division II and the conference in three-pointers made.
• This is also the third-straight game she has hit five three-pointers.
• The Owls had three players in double-digit points led by Wheeler who had 16, Pfohl with 15 and Steinauer with 12.
