Red-Hot Pfohl Leads Owls Past Saint Rose, 80-55

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Keyed by a career-high from senior Amanda Pfohl (Trumbull, Conn.), the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team defeated the College of Saint Rose, 80-55 at Moore Field House. The Owls improve to 13-11 overall and 7-9 in the Northeast 10, while the Golden Knights drop to 11-11 overall and 4-11 in the NE10.
 
Pfohl collected a career-high 28 points on 10-of-15 shooting from the floor and 6-of-10 shooting from three-point range. Junior Kiana Steinauer (Oakville, Ontario) collected her 19th double-double of the year with 24 points and 16 rebounds, while chipping in three steals and three assists. Junior Imani Wheeler (Dumfries, Va.) notched 18 points, five assists and four steals, while senior Allie Smith (Danbury, Conn.) had a career-high eight rebounds and four assists in the win.
 
1st Quarter (SCSU 26, STR 20)
• The Owls opened the game with a 17-4 run ignited by a three-pointer from Pfohl 36 seconds into play. Pfohl, the NCAA leader in three-pointers, had two of her game-high six three-pointers in the first quarter.
 
2nd Quarter (SCSU 47, STR 32)
• Pfohl continued to let the shots fly as she went 4-for-6 from beyond the arc and finished the quarter with 14 of her eventual 28 points. Southern entered halftime with a 15-point lead over Saint Rose after outscoring them 21-12.
 
3rd Quarter (SCSU 66, STR 48)
• Wheeler brought the thunder in the third quarter as she collected nine of her 18 points (4-for-6 from the field), adding a steal and an assist in a quarter the Owls outscored the Golden Knights 19-16.
 
4th Quarter (SCSU 80, STR 55)
• Southern held their largest lead of the day with 4:13 remaining in the game after Steinauer sank two free throws to extend their lead to 27 points.
• A combined offensive effort from a red-hot Pfohl, Steinauer and Wheeler proved to be the difference-maker as the Owls took the 80-55 victory over the Golden Knights.
 
Facts
• With six three-pointers, Amanda Pfohl now has 89 three-pointers for the year to match Kim Jackle's 2004-05 total for the second-most in a season in program history. She trails Kristen Breen's record of 90 in 1998-99. 
• With 28 points, 
Pfohl has topped a career-high in points, which was previously set on Jan. 19 against Stonehill when she had 24. She has also collected double-digit points in 22 of the Owls 24 games this season.
• This is also the fourth-straight game she has hit five three-pointers.
• 
Kiana Steinauer collected her NCAA DII and conference-leading 19th double-double of the year with 24 points and 16 rebounds. She has collected double-digit rebounds in five of the last six games for the Owls.
Allie Smith topped a career-best in rebounds with 8. Her previous career-high came on Dec. 30, 2018 against Dominican when she had seven. She also tied a career-high in assists with four.
• The Owls had three players in double-digit points led by Pfohl who had 28, Steinauer with 24 and Wheeler with 18.
 
Up Next
The Owls are set to host the Yellow Jackets of American International College on Tuesday, Feb. 12 at 5:30 p.m. at Moore Field House.
