Baseball Wins Wild One, 15-12, Against Queens

LANTANA, Fla. – The Southern Connecticut State University baseball team defeated Queens, 15-12, in a non-conference matchup at the Santaluces Athletic Complex in Lantana, Fla. With the win, the Owls improve to 5-6 on the year while Queens drops to 4-6-1.

Nolan Cloutier (Wallingford, Conn.) continued his hot hitting with a 4-for-5 day that included two doubles, two RBI and three runs scored, as well as a stolen base. John Spoto (Stamford, Conn.) was 3-for-5 with three runs scored while Mac Finnegan (Old Saybrook, Conn.) was 2-for-5 with a home run and three RBI. Connor Redahan (Greenwich, Conn.) was 2-for-5 with three runs scored while Mike DeMartino (New Haven, Conn.) returned to the Owls' lineup to collect three hits and score two runs.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Both teams scored early, and often, in a wild offensive display. Queens scored the game's first run in the first inning before tacking on three more runs in its second at-bat to take a 4-0 lead.
  • Southern responded in the top of the third inning with a pair of runs by Spoto and Cloutier.
  • After Queens took a three-run lead in the bottom half of the third, the Owls scored four times to take a 6-5 lead in the fourth with Finnegan, Cloutier, Zambito and Jim Palmer (Milford, Conn.) all driving in runs.
  • In the fifth, the Owls increased its lead to 9-5 on a RBI single by Spoto before two more runs came around on a Cloutier single.
  • The back-and-forth battle continued as Queens tied the game with a four-run fifth inning before the Owls countered with a four-run sixth.
  • Queens continued to chip away in the bottom half of the sixth with a run to make it 13-10 before Cameron O'Toole's (Grafton, Mass.) sacrifice fly ball in the seventh scored Cloutier and Finnegan's first home run of the season gave the Owls a 15-10 lead through the eighth.
  • In the eighth, Queens scored twice and loaded the bases before White entered the game and ended the Knights' threat.
NOTES
  • Redahan's two hit games pushes his team-best hitting streak to 10 games, while Palmer's 2-for-5 day gives him a hit in his last nine games.
  • Cloutier collected his team-leading seventh multiple-hit game- all coming in his last eight games.
  • The third-year Owl enjoyed an 8-for-12 weekend that saw his batting average jump from .400 entering Friday's game against Concordia to a team-leading .486 (18-37) following this matchup against Queens.
  • Cloutier now leads the team in hits (18), runs scored (14), doubles (8) and on-base percentage (.548).
  • Palmer also feasted on opposing pitchers this weekend with an 8-for-15 showing in three games to bring his average up from .290 to .370.
  • Webler's 3 2/3 innings pitched is not only his longest outing of the season, but also of his Owls' career as he picks up his second career win.
  • For White, he picked up his 11th career save after leading the Owls in the closer stat in each of the last four seasons.
