Baseball Falls To Merrimack, 9-3; Finnegan Homers In Second-Straight Game

LANTANA, Fla. – The Southern Connecticut State University baseball team lost to Merrimack, 9-3, in a non-conference matchup at the Santaluces Athletic Complex in Lantana, Fla. With the loss, the Owls drop to 5-7 overall while Merrimack goes to 3-5.

For Southern, Mac Finnegan (Old Saybrook, Conn.) homered for the second straight day with a three-run bomb in the bottom of the ninth inning. Mike DeMartino (New Haven, Conn.) was 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored while Nick Lamberti (East Haven, Conn.) was 1-for-3 with a run scored.

On the mound, Brendan Ebert (Berlin, Conn.) took the loss while Mike Ferrett (Hamden, Conn.) and John Bucci (Ansonia, Conn.) pitched well in relief. Ferrett logged four shutout innings with two strikeouts while scattering two hits while Bucci threw the ninth and held the Warriors scoreless.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Merrimack took a 1-0 lead with a lead-off home run by Joe Porricelli and tacked on another run in the third. The Warriors went on to score four in the fourth and three in the fifth to jump out to a 9-0 lead.
  • DeMartino delivered the Owls first hit of the game with two outs in the fourth, but Southern couldn't solve Merrimack starter Timmy Kalantzakos who gave up two hits while striking out six over eight scoreless innings.
  • The Owls broke through in the ninth inning when Lamberti singled off of Warriors reliever Wyatt Villella with one out.
  • After Connor Redahan (Greenwich, Conn.) popped out for the second out of the inning, DeMartino reached on an error before Finnegan connected for a three-run homer.
  • The Owls threatened again as John Spoto (Stamford, Conn.) and Nolan Cloutier (Wallingford, Conn.) followed with back-to-back singles but were left on base to end the game.

NOTES
  • Redahan extended his team-leading hitting streak to 11 games with a seventh-inning single. It matches the Owls' longest of last season, held by Ethan Joyce and Jim Palmer.
  • DeMartino is the second player to homer in back-to-back games this season after Lamberti did it against Florida National on Feb. 16 and Palm Beach Atlantic on Feb. 17.
  • Finnegan is also tied with Jim Palmer (Milford, Conn.) for the team lead with four multiple-RBI games.
  • Ferrett's collegiate career is off to a great start as the freshman reliever has yet to give up a run in 7 1/3 innings pitched across three appearances. His four-inning outing against Merrimack was his longest of the season.
  • Cloutier and Finnegan have now hit safely in four-straight games, while Lamberti's hit streak reached three.
