Baseball Falls To Florida National, 5-4

LANATA, Fla. – The Southern Connecticut State University baseball team lost to Florida National, 5-4, in a non-conference matchup at the Santaluces Athletic Complex in Lanata, Fla. The Owls drop to 5-8 overall while FNU improves to 5-15.

Connor Redahan (Greenwich, Conn.) was 2-for-3 with a double and a RBI while John Spoto (Stamford, Conn.) also collected two hits and a RBI. Nolan Cloutier (Wallingford, Conn.) strung together his team-leading eighth multiple-hit game of the season with a pair of singles while Mike Ferrett (Hamden, Conn.) was 2-for-4.

On the bump, Brandon Rentas (Wallingford, Conn.) gave up one run on two hits over six innings while striking out three and took the no-decision, while Nate Carney (Bristol, Conn.) pitched a perfect eighth inning.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Owls manufactured the game's first run when Redahan drove home Anthony Zambito (Ridgewood, N.J.) to give the Owls a 1-0 lead.
  • FNU then plated the game-tying run in the fourth off of a sacrifice fly ball. Rentas shut down the Conquistadors' offense the rest of the way as he retired the last eight batters he faced.
  • Cameron Winiarz (Uncasville, Conn.) started the seventh with a struckout, but allowed the next four batters to reach, including three consecutive singles, but it was an error that cost the Owls a pair of runs as FNU pushed its lead to 5-1.
  • In the eighth, Cloutier led off the inning with a single before stealing second base. After Ferrett slashed his second hit of the day, Zambito drove Cloutier home to cut FNU's lead to 5-2.
  • In the ninth, the Owls mounted its comeback bid after Nick Lamberti (East Haven, Conn.) reached on an error and then scored on another. Mike Demartino (New Haven, Conn.) then drew a walk before Spoto drove him home with a two-out single before the Owls' final batter was retired.

NOTES
  • With the hit in the second game of the day, Redehan pushed his team-leading hitting streak to 12 games. It's the Owls' longest hitting streak since Kyle Hart hit in 13 straight games in 2017. Lamberti also hit in 17-straight games that season.
  • Cloutier now has eight multiple-hit games in his last 10 games played and checks in at .455 (20-44) for the year.
  • Rentas' outing was his longest start of the season, and arguable his most successful and he has now posted back-to-back starts with three-or-fewer runs allowed.
  • Spoto entered the weekend hitting .152, but a 6-for-14 showing, with two multiple-hit games, in three games in Florida has raised his average to .234 for the year.

UP NEXT
The Owls return to action on Wednesday, Mar. 13 when they face St. Thomas University at Paul Demie Mainieri Field in Miami Gardens, Fla.
