Baseball Comes From Behind Again, Defeats Merrimack, 6-5, For Fourth-Straight Win

LANTANA, Fla. – The Southern Connecticut State University baseball team came-from-behind for the second-straight game to defeat Merrimack, 6-5, in a non-conference matchup in Lantana, Fla. The Owls win is their fourth-straight as they improve to 9-9 on the year while the Warriors drop to 5-8 on the season.

Trailing 4-3 in the top of the ninth, Cameron O'Toole (Grafton, Mass.) drove in Anthony Zambito (Ridgewood, N.J.) before scoring the go-ahead run on Nick Lamberti's (East Haven, Conn.) triple. O'Toole and Lamberti were both 3-for-4, while Lamberti came a home run short of the cycle. Mike DeMartino (New Haven, Conn.) also collected three hits.

On the mound, Brandon White (Simsbury, Conn.) took the no-decision despite a solid start that saw the freshman hurl seven innings. White allowed four runs – only one of which was earned – while scattering four hits and striking out five. Brandon Rentas (Wallingford, Conn.) pitched a 1/3 of an inning before Tommy Hughes (Newinton, Conn.) logged the final 1 2/3 for the win to improve to 2-1 on the year.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Southern took a 2-1 lead in the second inning after John Spoto (Stamford, Conn.) drove in Mac Finnegan (Stamford, Conn.) with a single before Zambito's ground ball to third scored DeMartino to give the Owls an early lead.
  • A costly error in the bottom half of the inning resulted in a pair of runs for the Warriors to give them a 3-2 lead.
  • In the sixth, the Owls loaded the bases for Nolan Cloutier's (Wallingford, Conn.) sacrifice fly to score Finnegan and tie the game. Merrimack would reclaim the lead in the bottom half of the inning.
  • Trailing 4-3 in the ninth, Zambito reached on an error and stole second. After Palmer grounded out, O'Toole's third hit of the day scored Zambito to tie the game at 4-4.
  • Lamberti then delivered a triple to plate Isaiah Likely, who entered the game as a pinch runner for O'Toole, to give the Owls a 5-4 lead. Connor Redahan (Greenwich, Conn.) then drove home Lamberti to give the Owls a 6-5 lead.
  • Merrimack tacked on another run in the bottom half of the inning and had two runners on base before Hughes pitched out of the jam to end the Warriors' threat.

NOTES
  • Lamberti's three-hit day is his third-consecutive multiple-hit game and he now owns a six-game hitting streak, while also reaching base safely in 11-straight games.
  • The Owls' All-NE10 outfielder hit .571 (8-14) over Southern's last three games with three RBI.
  • O'Toole also owns a six-game hitting streak through the Owls' win at Merrimack, and has six RBI over his last four games, as well as six runs scored.
  • DeMartino has five hits in his last two games while the win against Merrimack stands as his second three-hit outing of the season.
  • Finnegan has scored eight of his 16 runs this season in the Owls' four-game winning streak, while Zambito has now scored a run in six-straight games.
  • In addition to his six-game scoring streak, Zambito has stole eight bases in his last six games and is 14-for-14 for the season.
  • Southern is now 3-0 in three games in which White has started, but haven't earned the freshman hurler a win in his last two starts. His five strikeouts against Merrimack are a season-and career-best, as are his four hits and one earned run allowed.
  • Hughes leads the Owls' bullpen in relief victories after picking up his second of the season and first since he faced Mercy on Feb. 23.
