Baseball Edged By Bridgeport, 1-0

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University baseball team lost a non-conference matchup to Bridgeport, 1-0, in a non-conference matchup at Seaside Park in Bridgeport, Conn. With the loss, Southern drops to 9-10 overall while the Purple Knights improve to 3-13 on the season.

Cameron O'Toole (Grafton, Mass.) was 2-for-4 for the Owls while Jim Palmer (Milford, Conn.), Connor Redahan (Greenwich, Conn.) and Anthony Zambito (Ridgewood, N.J.) also collected hits for the Owls. Nate Carney (Bristol, Conn.) took the hard-luck loss after giving up the game's only run on two hits over six strong innings pitched. Ronnie Rossomando (Stratford, Conn.) pitched two scoreless innings with one hit allowed.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Bridgeport's Joey Grillo broke a 0-0 tie with the game's first, and what would be only run of the game on Patrick Palmer single in the bottom of the fifth.
  • Carney retired 13 of the first 14 batters he faced, with Grillo reaching on a walk in the second inning. In the fifth, Grillo walked to lead off the inning before Cory Listing bunted him over.
  • Palmer then broke up Carney's no-hitter and scored Grillo from second base.
  • Carney got out of the inning and pitched the sixth, giving up one hit, but avoiding further damage.

NOTES
  • Despite the loss, Carney has been locked-in for his last three appearances, allowing two runs over his last 14 innings pitched while striking out 14. It was his second-consecutive start in which he held the opposition to a single run.
  • O'Toole now owns the team's longest active hitting streak at seven games. The second-year designated hitter has multiple hits in four of his last five games and is hitting .555 (10-18) in that span.

Southern opens NE10 play this weekend when it hosts a pair of doubleheaders against Southern New Hampshire on Saturday, Mar. 23 and Franklin Pierce on Sunday, Mar. 24.
