Owls Fall To LIU Post in Home Opener

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University softball squad dropped two games to LIU Post, 6-2 and 11-2 (5 innings) at Pelz Field. The Owls fall to 1-11 overall, while the Pioneers improve to 12-4.
 
The Owls duo of Sara Buscetto (Waterford, Conn.) and Liz DeRosa (Hudson. N.H.) kept their bats hot as they extended their hitting streaks to five games. Buscetto went 3-for-6 on the day with two runs scored and one stolen base, while DeRosa went 3-for-6 including a homerun and added three RBI and one run. 
 
GAME ONE
  • LIU opened the game scoring off a single to left field. DeRosa got the Owls on the board when she hit an RBI single to right field and tied the game at one all.
  • The Pioneers counterattacked in the third inning off a single giving them a one-run lead. 
  • DeRosa's bat stayed hot in the fourth inning as she hit a solo homerun to left field to tie the game at 2-2.
  • LIU scored four unanswered runs between the fifth and sixth innings to capture the 6-2 victory in game one of today's home opening doubleheader.
 
GAME TWO
  • The Pioneers scored first in game two as Abbey Fortin singled to score Allie Laird. LIU added six runs in the third inning to take a commanding 7-0 lead.
  • DeRosa flew out to left field, but speedy Buscetto was able to zip home and get the Owls on the board.
  • Freshman Jacqueline Dumont (Nashua, N.H.) hit an RBI single to score fellow first-year Alexa Bacoulis (Monroe, Conn.). 
  • LIU added four unanswered runs in the fourth inning sealing their second victory of the day in five innings. 
 
Facts
  • Junior Sara Buscetto and freshman Liz DeRosa extended their hitting streak to five games.
  • Buscetto's stolen base in game two puts her at seven on the year. She is currently tied for fourth in stolen bases in the NE10.
  • In addition to her five-game hitting streak, DeRosa's collegiate career has gotten off to a hot start as she leads the team in RBI (8), second in hits (11), second in batting average (.324) and tied for second with Buscetto in doubles (2).

Up Next
It's a short turnaround time for the Owls as they welcome Elm City rival, the University of New Haven, tomorrow afternoon for a doubleheader. The first pitch for game one is slated for 2:30 p.m.
