Owls Drop Two to Elm City Rival New Haven

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Southern Connecticut State University softball squad dropped a 5-2 and 7-2 decision to Elm City rival, the University of New Haven at Pelz Field. The Owls drop to 1-13 over and 0-2 in the Northeast 10, while the Chargers improve to 6-6 overall and 2-0 in the NE10.
 
Jacqueline Dumont (Nashua, N.H.) led the Owls offense as she went 2-for-6 on the day collecting her team-leading second home run of the year to go along with a double and three RBI. 

Game One
  • UNH opened the scoring in the top of the second inning with one run off a fielder's choice. The Chargers then blasted a three-run home run to expand their lead to 4-0.
  • Freshman Jacqueline Dumont (Nashua, N.H.) blasted a solo home run in the third inning to get the Owls on the board, 4-1.
  • The Chargers added their fifth run in the top of the fourth inning off of an error.
  • Sophomore Jayden Delaporta (Mystic, Conn.) drove in Dumont with an RBI single in the bottom half of the inning, but UNH's second-inning home run sealed their first conference victory of the season.
  • Jazmyn Martinez (Middletown, N.Y.) pitched a complete game with four strikeouts.
 
Game Two
  • The Chargers got on the board in the first inning off an error.
  • UNH's Cat Vaughn blasted a RBI triple through the left side, scoring on the throw, 3-0 UNH. The Chargers added another run in the third inning as Jovanna Hillman singled through the right side to score Taylor Luzzi.
  • Dumont's big bat came out again in the second game as she doubled to right field, scoring Liz DeRosa (Hudson, N.H.) and Julia Lener (Danbury, Conn.).
  • UNH added two more runs in the seventh inning to widen their gap leading them to capture the 7-2 victory in game two of the conference opening doubleheader at Pelz Field.
  • Kailey Westington (Ridgefield, Conn.) pitched a complete game with two strikeouts.
 
Facts
  • Junior Sara Buscetto and freshman Liz DeRosa snapped their hitting streaks. DeRosa's hitting streak was halted in game one, while Buscetto extended hers to six games before having it halted in game two.
  • Buscetto's stolen base in game two puts her at eight on the year. She is currently tied for fourth in stolen bases in the NE10.
  • DeRosa's collegiate career has gotten off to a hot start as she leads the team in RBI (8) and is third in hits (11).
 
 
Up Next
The Owls are set to host two back-to-back doubleheaders this weekend when they host Merrimack on Saturday, March 23 and Assumption on Sunday, March 24. Both days of doubleheaders will have the first pitch thrown at 12 p.m.
