Botteon Has a Day as Owls Split a Pair With Assumption

NEW HAVEN, Conn.  – The Southern Connecticut State University softball squad split a pair of games against Assumption College, a 13-8 loss in game one and a 12-4 (6 innings) win in game two. The Owls improve to 2-14 overall and 1-3 in the Northeast 10, while the Greyhounds improve to 8-10 and 1-3 in the NE10.

Sophomore slapper Cailey Botteon (Moodus, Conn.) was a standout performer during the doubleheader as she went 5-for-8 on the day with six RBI, including two game-tying at-bats in both games. Freshmen trio Liz DeRosa (Hudson, N.H.), Jacqueline Dumont (Nashua, N.H.) and Alexa Bacoulis (Monroe, Conn.) also helped lead the charge for the Owls. DeRosa continued to impress, going 5-for-8 including a double in game two with four runs scored and three RBI. Dumont collected four hits in eight at-bats including three RBI and two runs, while Bacoulis had a break-out game going 4-for-7 with doubles in back-to-back games, four runs scored and three RBI.

Game 1
  • Assumption flew out of the gates putting up four quick runs in the first inning, but the Owls battled right back in the bottom half of the inning.
  • Freshman Ivy Geloso (Beacon Falls, Conn.) launched a double to left-center; bringing Sara Buscetto (Waterford, Conn.) around the horn for the Owls first run. In the next at-bat, junior Julia Lener (Danbury, Conn.) flew out to center field as Geloso put the wheels on, scoring on the tag. Botteon collected her first of three hits with a two-RBI single that brought in freshmen Bacoulis and Dumont to tie the game at four-all.
  • A second-inning double to left field gave the Greyhounds a two-run lead, 6-4. The Owls, again, battled back, tying the game at six-all when Dumont scored on a fielder's choice and then Jayden Delaporta (Mystic, Conn.) singled through the left side, bringing Bacoulis home.
  • Assumption added seven runs between the sixth and the seventh inning to secure their 13-8 game one victory at Pelz Field.

Game 2
  • Assumption struck first in game two as Victoria Petrie blasted a three-run home run in the first inning. Southern's "never say die" attitude allowed them to bounce back in the bottom half of the inning as Dumont singled to score Buscetto, 3-1. Botteon picked up her first of two hits and her second game-tying hit with a single that scored DeRosa.
  • The Owls continued to stay hot in the third inning as DeRosa took her turn at the plate and blasted a double to center field to score Lener. Bacoulis then singled to right center which brought DeRosa home. Delaporta let a frozen rope go as she singled up the middle that scored Bacoulis, 6-3 Owls at the end of three.
  • Southern Connecticut kept it rolling in the fifth inning as Bacoulis hit a line drive down the left field line to score DeRosa, extending their lead to four. Delaporta collected her second RBI single to bring in Bacoulis and give the Owls an 8-3 lead.
  • Assumption added another run in the sixth inning, but the Owls countered with four runs in the sixth. Dumont singled in the sixth inning to bring in Lener and Ally Petrella (Willington, Conn.). Bacoulis, who was hot the entire day, singled through the right side to bring home DeRosa and then Botteon collected her second hit of the game, slap-hitting to the pitcher and putting the wheels on, safely arriving at first to score Dumont.
  • The Owls' tenacity through six innings proved to be the deciding factor in their successful 12-4 victory over Assumption in game two.
  • Senior Delany Turner (Leesburg, Va.) collected her first win of the season in the circle as she pitched 5.1 innings on 24 batters faced.
