Owls Drop Two, Including Extra Inning Thriller To New Haven

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University softball team dropped two games to Elm City rival, the University of New Haven, 11-3 (5 innings) and 6-5 (10 innings) at the UNH Softball Field. The Owls drop to 2-16 overall and 1-5 in the Northeast 10 as the Chargers improve to 12-6 overall and 8-0 in the NE10.

Junior Julia Lener (Danbury, Conn.) went 2-for-7 including two doubles with one run and three RBI, while freshman Jacqueline Dumont (Nashua, N.H.) brought the thunder in game two as she went 3-for-5 including a double and one RBI, while notching three RBI in total on the day.

Game 1 – (New Haven 11, Southern Connecticut 3)
  • New Haven jumped on the board with two quick runs as Rachel Crafts hit a two RBI single.
  • The Chargers added another run in the third inning as Mya Case singled through the left side, 3-0.
  • Dumont, who reached on a fielder's choice, knocked a two RBI grounder to the shortstop just as DeRosa was sliding safely into second. The shortstops decision to make the play on DeRosa allowed Ivy Geloso (Beacon Falls, Conn.) and Lener to score on the play, 3-2.
  • The Chargers' Madison Derosia singled with two outs in the bottom of the third inning to put UNH up 4-2. UNH added two more runs in the fourth inning, 6-2.
  • Lener grounded out to the shortstop, which allowed Sara Buscetto (Waterford, Conn.) to score in the fifth inning, 6-3.
  • New Haven added five more runs in the fifth inning to capture an 11-3 victory in game one.

Game 2 – (New Haven 6, Southern Connecticut 5)
  • The Chargers struck first in game two as Sierra Whitlock scored on the tag to give UNH an early 1-0 lead.
  • Ally Petrella (Willington, Conn.) recorded her first RBI of her collegiate career when she reached on a fielder's choice and scored Kelsey White to tie the game at one all in the top of the second inning. New Haven countered back in the bottom half of the inning scoring two back-to-back runs off a double and an error, 3-1.
  • Freshman Alexa Bacoulis (Monroe, Conn.) scored from second in the third inning to put the Owls within one, 3-2.
  • The score remained untouched until Lener was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score Maria Zeceña (Stamford, Conn.), which tied the game 3-3. Kailey Westington (Ridgefield, Conn.) dazzled in the circle in the bottom of the seventh inning for the Owls. A complete 360 degree turn from game one, the Owls and Chargers took game two into extra innings.
  • Lener popped a double to left center field in the 10th inning to score Bacoulis. Two batters later, Dumont hit a RBI single to left field to score fellow newcomer Geloso and give the Owls a 5-3 lead going into the bottom of the 10th.
  • A pair of singles for the Chargers tied the game, 5-5. With a runner on second and a wild pitch, the Chargers were able to score to notch the extra-inning victory in West Haven.
