Owls Split Two-Game Showing With Mercy

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – The Southern Connecticut State University softball squad split a pair of games with Mercy College, a 5-3 win and a 6-3 loss at Smith Field. The Owls improve to 3-17 overall, while the Mavericks improve to 12-10 on the year.
 
Junior Sara Buscetto (Waterford, Conn.) had a breakout day where she went 4-for-8 including her first home run of the season, three runs, two RBI and a stolen base. Freshman Jacqueline Dumont (Nashua, N.H.) continued her hot streak going 3-for-7 including her third home run of the season, while adding three RBI and two runs. Freshman Alexa Bacoulis (Monroe, Conn.) exploded in game one going 4-for-4 adding a run as well.
 
Game 1 – (Southern Connecticut 5, Mercy 3)
  • The Owls got rolling early as Dumont blasted a three-run home run in the top of the first to bring Buscetto and Bacoulis around the horn and give Southern a 3-0 lead.
  • Mercy tried to find their groove in the fourth inning scoring on a wild pitch, cutting the Owls lead to two.
  • They threatened again in the seventh inning after they tied the game on a Yiannah Bowman double to right field, 3-3.
  • Bacoulis had other plans for the game as she singled through the left side to score Maria Zecena (Stamford, Conn.). Liz DeRosa (Hudson, N.H.) reached on a dropped pop up by the first baseman, which allowed Buscetto to sneak home and give the Owls a 5-3 lead. The Mavericks were unable to capitalize in the bottom half of the inning leading Southern Connecticut to capture a 5-3 win in game one.
  • Sophomore Jazmyn Martinez (Middletown, N.Y.) captured her second win of the season, pitching a complete game with seven strikeouts in 33 batters faced.
 
Game 2 – (Mercy 6, Southern Connecticut 3)
  • Southern Connecticut struck first again in game two as Cailey Botteon (Moodus, Conn.) hit a RBI single to the pitcher that allowed Dumont to score, 1-0.
  • The game remained 1-0 for the next two innings before Buscetto knocked a two-run home run to right field that gave the Owls a 3-0 lead.
  • Mercy scored six unanswered runs in the sixth inning to capture the 6-3 game two win at Smith Field.
 
Facts
  • Dumont leads the team in RBI with 15 after she tallied three against Mercy. She is also tied for six in the Northeast 10 in RBI and home runs with 3.
  • Buscetto sits tied for third in stolen bases in the NE10, with nine on the year. She ranked fourth in hits in the NE10 with 23 and 11th in runs with 11.
  • Buscetto extended her hitting streak to six games, while Dumont has a mini hitting streak of three games going.
  • Game one was Jazmyn Martinez's third complete game pitched this season. She is two games shy of her freshman year season total when she pitched seven-or-more innings in five games.
 
Up Next
The Owls look ahead to the weekend when they head north of the state just over the border to face American International College in Springfield, Mass. for two days of back-to-back doubleheaders. Game one is slated for 12 p.m.
