Softball Splits Twinbill With AIC

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Southern Connecticut State University softball squad split a pair of games with American International College, a 3-0 win and a 7-0 loss. The Owls improve to 4-18 overall 2-6 in the Northeast 10, while the Yellow Jackets improve to 4-11 overall and 2-4 in the NE10.

Freshman Jacqueline Dumont (Nashua, N.H.) went 2-for-4 in game one, including the game-winning RBI double, while adding two RBI. Fellow freshman Alexa Bacoulis (Monroe, Conn.) went 3-for-4 in game one, while tallying one run.

Game 1 – (Southern Connecticut 3, AIC 0)
  • The Owls struck first in the opening inning as Dumont doubled to left center to bring in Buscetto and Bacoulis, 2-0.
  • The Owls maintained their two-run lead through the next five innings. Neither team could connect on any attempts, tallying six hits between both squads during that timeframe.
  • Southern Connecticut connected in the top of the seventh inning after freshman Liz DeRosa (Hudson, N.H.) laid a bunt down and Buscetto squeezed through to score, 3-0.
  • Jazmyn Martinez (Middletown, N.Y.) pitched her fourth complete game of the year notching her third win, while striking out four in 25 batters faced.

Game 2 – (AIC 7, Southern Connecticut 0)
  • AIC opened the scoring in game two collecting two runs off two hits in the first inning.
  • The Yellow Jackets added another run in the second, a run in the fifth and three runs in the sixth inning off a three-run home run, 7-0.
  • The Owls were unable to capitalize on their five hits allowing the Yellow Jackets to capture the game two victory.

Facts
  • Game one was Jazmyn Martinez's fourth complete game pitched this season. She is one games shy of her freshman year season total where she pitched five games of seven-or-more innings.
  • The Owls collected four stolen bases in game one from four different players. Four stolen bases is the most Southern Connecticut has recorded in a single game since they played Clarion on February 16 and they had five.
  • Jacqueline Dumont leads the team in RBI with 17 after she tallied three against Mercy. She is also tied for second in the Northeast 10 in RBI and home runs with 3.
  • Buscetto is fourth in stolen bases in the NE10, with ten on the year. She ranked fourth in hits in the NE10 with 24 and tied for seventh in runs with 13.
 
Up Next
The Owls return to action tomorrow, March 30 for another doubleheader with American International College in Springfield. First pitch for game one is slated for noon.
