SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Southern Connecticut State University softball squad fell to American International College, 6-1 and 5-4. The Owls drop to 4-20 overall 2-7 in the Northeast 10, while the Yellow Jackets improve to 6-11 overall and 3-4 in the NE10.
Freshman
Ally Petrella (Willington, Conn.) went 3-for-5 on the day including two doubles and recorded one run.
Sara Buscetto (Waterford, Conn.) went 2-for-6, scoring one run and recording two stolen bases.
Liz DeRosa (Hudson, N.H) went 2-for-5 with one run and one RBI.
Game 1 – (AIC 6, Southern Connecticut 1)
- After a scoreless two innings, the Owls got on the board in the third as DeRosa singled up the middle to score freshman Ally Petrella.
- AIC struck back in the bottom half of the inning, tying the game off a walk, 1-1.
- The Yellow Jackets scored the go-ahead run in the fourth inning off an error. They went on to score four unanswered runs in the sixth inning.
- AIC's second half rally proved to be enough for them to capture the 6-1 victory in game one of today's doubleheader.
- Jazmyn Martinez (Middletown, N.Y.) pitched 5.2 innings allowing six hits and struck out three in 31 batters faced.
Game 2 – (AIC 5, Southern Connecticut 4)
- AIC kept their momentum going in game two. They struck in the third inning, scoring four runs off two hits. The Yellow Jackets chipped in another run in the fourth inning, taking a commanding five-run lead.
- Southern found their footing in the fifth inning as Ivy Geloso (Beacon Falls, Conn.) hit an RBI single to right center that got the Owls on the board, 5-1.
- Two batters later, Dumont knocked a shot the right center that brought Geloso around, 5-2.
- Jayden Delaporta (Mystic, Conn.) reached on a fielder's choice, scoring DeRosa, 5-3. Delaporta would eventually come around to score on a wild pitch, 5-4.
- Due to weather conditions, the game was halted after the fifth inning and AIC took the 5-4 victory.
Notes
- In the four-game trip at AIC this weekend, freshman Ally Petrella recorded the first four hits of her collegiate career and recorded her first set of doubles with two in game two.
- Jacqueline Dumont leads the team in RBI with 18. She is also tied for second in the Northeast 10 in RBI and tied for fourth in home runs with 3.
- Buscetto is second in stolen bases in the NE10, with 12 on the year. She ranks fourth in hits in the NE10 with 26 and tied for sixth in runs with 14.
