NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Southern Connecticut State University softball squad dropped two games of a doubleheader, 5-1 and 6-3, at Pelz Field in New Haven. The Owls drop to 4-22 overall and 2-10 in the Northeast 10, while the Panthers improve to 15-12 and 8-1 in the NE10.
Junior Sara Buscetto (Waterford, Conn.) went 2-for-6 on the day with one RBI, one run scored and one stolen base, while sophomore Jazmyn Martinez (Middletown, N.Y.) pitched her fifth complete game of the season, tying a career-high in complete games pitched.
Game 1 - (Adelphi 5, Southern Connecticut 1)
- Adelphi struck first in the second inning as the Panther's Emily Whitman cleared the bases with a three-RBI triple to right center, 3-0. They increased their lead to five runs when Emily Turney knocked a two-RBI single through the right side, 5-0.
- Maria Zecena (Stamford, Conn.) put the Owls on the board in the bottom half of the second, singling through the right side to score Cailey Botteon (Moodus, Conn.) before being thrown out.
- The score remained 5-1 through the remainder of the game as Adelphi's strong second inning allowed them to capture the win in game one.
Game 2 - (Adelphi 6, Southern Connecticut 3)
- Adelphi jumped on the board first in game two as Nicolette Cuccio doubled down the left field line for a RBI single. Lauren Sandlier hit a RBI single that drove in Turney to make it 2-0 Panthers.
- The Owls got on the board as Jacqueline Dumont (Nashua, N.H.) flew out to center field, scoring Buscetto and collecting a RBI on the play.
- The Panthers added three more third-inning runs with the first coming off a RBI single, the second from a wild pitch and the third run off the tag on a fly-out to center field, 5-1.
- Adelphi's Cuccio blasted a solo home run to left center to extend the Panthers lead to five, 6-1.
- Botteon roped a single up the middle with Jayden Delaporta (Mystic, Conn.) putting the wheels on from second to score, 6-2. Botteon eventually rounded the bases, scoring on a ground out.
- Adelphi's steady play proved to be the difference maker as they went on to capture the 6-3 victory at Pelz Field.
Notes
- Game one was Jazmyn Martinez's fifth complete game pitched this season, tying her freshman year season total, where she pitched five games of seven-or-more innings.
- Jacqueline Dumont leads the team in RBI with 18. She is also fifth in the Northeast 10 in RBI and tied for fifth in home runs with 3.
- Buscetto is second in stolen bases in the NE10, with 14 on the year. She ranks fourth in hits in the NE10 with 28 and tied for eighth in runs with 15.
