Bacoulis' Extra-Inning Heroics Lead Owls Past Le Moyne


NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University softball squad split a pair of games with Le Moyne, a 4-1 10 inning win and a 4-2 loss at Pelz Field. The Owls record moves to 7-30 and 5-16 in the Northeast 10, while Le Moyne moves to 16-13 overall and 8-4 in the NE10.
 
Freshman Alexa Bacoulis (Monroe, Conn.) blasted a grand slam in the bottom of the 10th inning of game two to lead the Owls to an extra-inning victory, while collecting four RBI and scoring one run over the course of game two and three. Freshman Liz DeRosa (Hudson, N.H.) went 4-for-7, scoring one run. 
 
Sophomore Jayden Delaporta (Mystic, Conn.) went 2-for-3 in the final game of the series with a RBI, while junior Sara Buscetto went 2-for-4 with a run in game two and added her 21st stolen base in the finale. 
 
Game 2 – (Southern Connecticut 4, Le Moyne 1)
  • After a scoreless eight innings and a diving catch in right field from DeRosa to keep Le Moyne off the board the night before, the Owls and Dolphins resumed play in the top of the ninth inning to determine a game two victor.
  • Le Moyne wiped their goose egg off the board in the top of the 10th inning, scoring on the tag of a fly-out to center field.
  • With a 1-2 count, two outs, the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th inning, Bacoulis stepped to the plate and blasted a walk-off grand slam to left center field to capture the victory.
  • Bacoulis' late game heroics combined with stellar 1-2 pitching from seniors Madison Feshler (Middletown, Conn.) and Delany Turner (Leesburg, Va.) led the Owls to victory. 
 
Game 3 – (Le Moyne 4, Southern Connecticut 2)
  • The Dolphins got on the board first, scoring one run off a passed ball in the first inning. The Owls countered, scoring a run off a Bacoulis single in the bottom half of the inning, 1-1.
  • Southern Connecticut took the lead in the third inning as Delaporta blasted a double to the fence in center field that brought around DeRosa, 2-1. 
  • Le Moyne eventually collected a run in each of the remaining three innings, going on to capture the 4-2 victory in this weekend's final showing.
 
Notes
  • Alexa Bacoulis tallied her first collegiate home run, a grand slam, in the bottom of the 10thinning to lead Southern Connecticut to victory.
  • Sara Buscetto collected her 21st stolen base of the year with one stolen in game three this weekend.
 
Up Next
The Owls head to Pleasantville, N.Y. for a Southwest Division matchup with the Pace University on Tuesday, April 16. Game one is slated for a 2 p.m. start.
