Owls Defeated Twice at Pace

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – The Southern Connecticut State University softball team dropped two games of a doubleheader to Pace, 8-0 and 4-1 at the Pace Softball Field in Pleasantville. The Owls drop to 7-32 overall and 5-18 in the Northeast 10, while the Setters improve to 15-18 overall and 6-13 in the NE10.

Alexa Bacoulis (Monroe, Conn.) went 3-for-6 on the day including a double and a RBI, while Sara Buscetto (Waterford, Conn.) went 2-for-7 with one run and one stolen base.

Sophomore pitcher Kailey Westington (Ridgefield, Conn.), who only has 17 at-bats this season, seeing most of her time in the circle, dazzled at the plate going 2-for-3 in game two including a double, while pitching six innings with two strikeouts.

Game 1 – (Pace 8, Southern Connecticut 0)
  • After a scoreless four innings, Pace rallied in the bottom half of the fifth inning scoring six runs off three hits to take a commanding 6-0 lead. They chipped in two more runs in the sixth off two hits.
  • The Setters, who got hot late in the game, went on to grab the victory, 8-0.
  • Jazmyn Martinez (Middletown, N.Y.) pitched 4.1 innings with two strikeouts.

Game 2 – (Pace 4, Southern Connecticut 1)
  • Bacoulis opened game two with a double to left center field that scored Buscetto and put the Owls up 1-0 in the first inning.
  • A second inning two-run home run from Pace gave them the lead with the eventual winning run being the home run hitter, Lindsey ah Soon. The Setter added a run in the fifth off a double and the sixth off a solo home run to left center.
  • Soon's home run and Pace's stingy defense proved to be the game-deciding factor as the Setters took the 4-1 victory in game two.

Notes
  • Junior Sara Buscetto collected her 22nd stolen base of the year with one stolen in game two. With her 22 stolen bases this season, she is now tied for first in SCSU all-time single season stolen bases with Megan Caporossi, who had 22 in 2009.
  • Sophomore Jazmyn Martinez pitched 4.1 innings and is tied for sixth in the NE10 in complete games pitched with 11 and is eighth in innings pitched with 105 in total.
  • Freshman Alexa Bacoulis is riding a six-game hitting streak, collecting at least two hits in each of the Owls last six games.
  • Southern Connecticut out-hit Pace in game one 8-to-6, while the Setters out-hit the Owls 12-to-4 in game two.
