Quantique White 2-Hits New Haven, Owls Blank Chargers, 17-0

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University baseball team defeated University of New Haven, 17-0, in a Northeast 10 Conference matchup at The Ballpark at SCSU in New Haven, Conn. With the win, the Owls improve to 15-21 overall, 6-10 in the NE10 and 4-5 in the Southwest Division while New Haven drops to 11-16 overall, 5-8 in the conference and 2-5 in the Southwest Division.

Quantique White (New London, Conn.) hurled a complete-game, two-hit shutout. White was masterful as he struck out six batters, while walking one and allowing just four baserunners for the afternoon, none of which reached second base. The Owls' closer, White has saved 15 games in his four-year career including four this season, before getting the spot-start against the Chargers. It was White's first win as a starter of his career and his first win since Mar. 13, 2017.

For the Owls, it is the fifth shutout against New Haven, all-time, in the 106th meeting between the two teams, and the first time since 2014. It is also the largest margin of victory against the Chargers, all-time.

At the plate, Nick Lamberti (East Haven, Conn.) was 4-for-8 with two triples, eight RBI and three runs scored. Lamberti missed the cycle by a home run and became the first player to drive-in eight runs in a game since Ryan Geffert against Bridgeport on Apr. 7, 2010. He's also the first player since Tyler Criscuolo (Branford, Conn.) against Adelphi on Mar. 16, 2018 to record two triples in one game. Criscuolo was 3-for-6 with three RBI in the game while Jim Palmer (Milford, Conn.) was 3-for-4 with three runs scored. Cam O'Toole (Grafton, Mass.) was 2-for-4 with two RBI and three runs scored while Nolan Cloutier (Wallingford, Conn.) and John Spoto (Stamford, Conn.) also scored three runs each.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Owls scored three times in the first inning, highlighted by Lamberti's RBI double that scored Palmer. Lamberti then stole third before scoring on a single by Criscuolo. Mac Finnegan (Old Saybrook, Conn.) then broke Criscuolo home with a sacrifice fly.
  • The Owls' pushed their lead to 8-0 with a five-run second inning. Cloutier reached on an error to start the inning before moving to third on Spoto's double. After Cloutier scored on a wild pitch, Palmer walked and stole second. O'Toole singled to score Spoto before Lamberti singled to score O'Toole and Palmer before scoring on Criscuolo's base hit.
  • In the third, Cloutier walked to lead-off the inning, but was retired on Spoto's double-play ball, with Spoto reaching on a fielder's choice. After O'Toole walk, Lamberti drove in two runs with a triple down the right field line before scoring on a single by Criscuolo.
  • After Palmer drove home Cloutier with a double in the fourth to give Southern a 12-0 lead, Mike DeMartino (New Haven, Conn.) lead off the sixth with a double before moving to third on a wild pitch. Cloutier then drove him in with a sacrifice fly to right field to give Southern a 13-0 lead.
  • In the eighth, Cloutier singled with two outs, followed by a single by Spoto before Palmer was hit by a pitch to load the bases. O'Toole then scored Cloutier with a single before Lamberti cleared the bases with his second triple of the day.
  • White was dominant for the entire game. After New Haven's top hitter, Matt Chamberlain, reached on an error in the first, White sat down the next four batters he faced. Dylon Chiaro led off with the third inning with New Haven's first hit of the day before White went on to retire the next eight batters he faced. Chiaro walked to lead-off the sixth before White got the next batter to pop up and then got two ground balls to end the inning. He retired the next seven batters he faced before giving up a single in the top of the ninth. He then induced a double play to end the game.
