Buscetto Breaks Single-Season Record, Owls Fall To Pace

NEW HAVEN, Conn.– The Southern Connecticut State University softball team fell to Pace University, 4-2 in Northeast 10 Conference action at Pelz Field. The Owls drop to 7-33 overall and 5-17 in the NE10, while the Setters improve to 18-18 overall and 9-13 in the NE10.
 
Junior Sara Buscetto (Waterford, Conn.) collected her 23rd stolen base of the year to move into first place all-time in SCSU history in single-season steals. Buscetto also recorded a hit and a run. Sophomore Cailey Botteon (Moodus, Conn.) went 2-for-3 with a double, while freshman Alexa Bacoulis (Monroe, Conn.) went 1-for-2 with two RBI in the loss.

  • The Setters jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the second inning off a tag-up and a two-run home run.
  • Bacoulis knocked a two RBI single in the third inning, scoring Buscetto and Maria Zecena (Stamford, Conn.) to put the Owls within one.
  • Pace was able to add a security run in the sixth to cement a 4-2 victory in New Haven.
  • Jazmyn Martinez (Middletown, N.Y.) collected her 12thcomplete game this season, pitching seven innings with two strikeouts in 28 batters faced.
 
Notes
  • Junior Sara Buscetto collected her 23rdstolen base of the year with one stolen in game two. With her 23 stolen bases this season and surpassed Megan Caporossi, who had 22 in 2009, for first in SCSU all-time single season stolen bases.
  • Freshman Alexa Bacoulis is riding a seven-game hitting streak, collecting at least two hits in each of the Owls last seven games.
 
Up Next
The Owls close the regular season this week with a four-game road stint at the College of Saint Rose in Albany, N.Y. They'll play two games on Friday, April 26 and two on Saturday, April 27. Friday's doubleheader begins at 4 p.m. and Saturday's doubleheader begins noon.
