Seventh-Inning Scoring Frenzy Leads Owls to 12-7 Victory Over Saint Rose

ALBANY, N.Y. – A seventh-inning rally from the Southern Connecticut State University softball squad allowed them to capture a 12-7 victory in game one before falling 9-4 in game two of a doubleheader against the College of Saint Rose at the Plumeri Sports Complex in Albany.

Sara Buscetto (Waterford, Conn.) 4-for-9 with four RBI, two runs and a stolen base. Jayden Delaporta (Mystic, Conn.) went 3-for-6 with four runs, two RBI and two walks, while Alexa Bacoulis (Monroe, Conn.) went 3-for-8 with two runs and two RBI. Delany Turner 3-for-6 with two RBI.

Maria Zeceña (Stamford, Conn.) went 3-for-4 in game one with two runs scored, one RBI and two stolen bases, while Lauryn Zubia (San Fernando, Calif.) 2-for-4 with two RBI in game two.

Game 1 – (Southern Connecticut 12, Saint Rose 7)
  • Southern opened the scoring in the first inning as Bacoulis singled to score Buscetto, 1-0.
  • Saint Rose removed their goose egg in the fourth inning, scoring four runs and take a 4-1 lead, which they held until the seventh inning.
  • The Owls put their rally caps on in the seventh inning as they were ignited by a Delaporta solo home run to left center field that started off the rally.
  • Buscetto took her turn at the plate knocking a two RBI single, scoring Zecena and Ivy Geloso (Beacon, Falls, Conn.) and tie it up, 4-4.
  • Bacoulis broke the tie with a double that scored Buscetto, 5-4. Jacqueline Dumont (Nashua, N.H.) reached first on an intended sacrifice bunt that scored Kailey Westington (Ridgefield, Conn.), 6-4.
  • Delaporta knocked a RBI single, bringing Bacoulis around and allowing the Owls to take a 7-4 lead.
  • Turner brought in what would be the eventual game-winning run after she singled and scored Dumont.
  • The Owls weren't finished there as Liz DeRosa (Hudson, N.H.) scored on an error and Delaporta eventually scored on a wild pitch, 10-4.
  • Two more back-to-back hits from the Zecena, who singled, and Buscetto, who doubled allowed the Owls to score to more runs and take a commanding 12-4 lead, while the Golden Knights still had their turn at the plate.
  • Saint Rose managed to put three more runs on the board off two hits, but the Owls seventh-inning scoring frenzy allowed them to capture the 12-7 victory in game one.
  • Jazmyn Martinez (Middletown, N.Y.) and Westington split time in the circle as Martinez pitched four innings with one strikeout, while Westington, who collected the win, pitched three innings.

Game 2 – (Saint Rose 9, Southern Connecticut 4)
  • Saint Rose rolled out of the gates early in game two, scoring three runs off a RBI double from the Golden Knights Erin Maloney.
  • Zubia singled to bring in Delaporta and put the Owls on the board, 3-1.
  • The Golden Knights extended their lead further a second inning where they collected three runs off two hits, 6-1.
  • Turner singled in the third inning to score Buscetto, 6-2, but Saint Rose countered with three runs in the fourth inning, 9-2.
  • Delaporta and Zubia collected fifth-inning RBI singles to bring the Owls within five, but the Golden Knights steady offense led them to capture the 9-5 victory in game two of the doubleheader.

Notes
  • Junior Sara Buscetto collected her 24th stolen base of the year with one stolen in game two. She has extended her first-place lead in SCSU single-season stolen bases by two. With her 23rd stolen base last week, she surpassed Megan Caporossi, who had 22 in 2009, for first in SCSU all-time single season stolen bases.
  • Alexa Bacoulis is riding a nine-game hitting streak, collecting at least three hits in each of the Owls last nine games. This is the longest hitting streak held by an Owl during the 2019 season.
  • Jayden Delaporta notched her second career home run. Her last came against Saint Michael's on April 6.
  • This is the most runs the Owls have scored in a single game since March 24 when the Owls scored 12 runs in their win against Assumption.
  • Game one saw the Owls score a single run in the first inning, then zero runs through the next five innings before scoring 11 runs in the final inning to capture the win, something the Owls have not done yet this season.
  • Their 16 hits in game one was the Owls first game this season where they collected 15-or-more hits in a single game.
