Baseball Drops 2-1 Decision To Adelphi

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -The Southern Connecticut State University dropped a close game to Adelphi, 2-1, in a Northeast 10 Conference Southwest Division matchup at The Ballpark at SCSU. With the loss, the Owls drop to 17-23 overall and 8-12 in the NE10 and are now 6-7 in the Southwest Division. Adelphi improves to 28-5 on the season including a conference record of 16-1 including a 9-1 mark in division play.

Cameron O'Toole (Grafton, Mass.) was 3-for-4 in the game while Nick Lamberti (East Haven, Conn.) had a RBI double that scored Jim Palmer (Milford, Conn.) with the Owls' only run. Palmer reached base three times, all on walks.

On the mound, Ronnie Rossomando (Stratford, Conn.) took the hard luck loss after a brilliant performance on the mound. Rossomando carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning before giving up a two-out single. Before walking the previous batter, Rossomando had retired 13-consecutive batters. Both runs allowed were unearned after two costly errors in the sixth inning while Rossomando scattered three hits and striking out eight batters. Jared Henry (West Stockbridge, Mass.) struck out three over 1 2/3 innings while holding Adelphi hitless and Patrick Webler (Brockline, Mass.) pitched a scoreless ninth.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Owls broke up the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth when Palmer drew a one-out walk before O'Toole singled to right field. Lamberti then drilled a double down the right field line to score Palmer and give the Owls a 1-0 lead.
  • In the top of the sixth, Rossomando struck out the first batter of the inning before Thomas Colombo reached on a throwing error and moved to second on a wild pitch. Lucas Terwillinger then singled through the right side of the infield to score Colombo and tie the game. After Terwillinger moved to second on another wild pitch, Brandon Warick reached on a fielding error that allowed Terwillinger to score with the go-ahead run. Rossomando then struck out the final two batters of the inning.
  • Henry entered the game in the top of the seventh with one out after a single by Jordan Milo. After Mile stole second, Mike DeMartino (New Haven, Conn.) threw him out at third attempting to steal. Henry struck out the last batter in the that inning and then two of the three batters he faced in the eighth.

NOTES
  • O'Toole's bat has been scorching over the last two weeks as the sophomore is hitting .432 (16-37) in his last eight games, of which he has recorded multiple hits in seven. Through his last three games he has seven hits in 15 at-bats and has pushed his team-leading batting average to .339.
  • While Palmer's hitting streak ended at 10 games, he has scored a run in his last six games and has reached base safely in 11-straight. His 32 runs scored rank second in the Owls' lineup behind Nolan Cloutier's (Wallingford, Conn.) 33.
  • Tyler Criscuolo (Branford, Conn.) drew an intentional walk in the fifth inning to give him a team-best 23-game on-base streak.
  • DeMartino stroked his team-leading 18th double of the season in the Owls' loss, giving him three-straight games with an extra-base hit.
  • Lamberti's RBI double gives him a team-best 35 for the year.
  • Rossomando has been locked in in his last two starts in which he has not allowed an earned run over the last 13 1/3 innings while allowing four hits and striking out 18.
  • Henry has also been solid out of the bullpen in his last four appearances. The first-year right-handed reliever has not given up a run in his last seven innings pitched while striking out 12 and allowing just two hits and walking three.
  • Webler has also been reliable in his last four appearances with one earned run allowed on seven hits over his last four innings pitched.
