Baseball Drops Doubleheader At Pace

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – The Southern Connecticut State University baseball team dropped a doubleheader at Pace University, losing the first game, 14-1, before the Setters took the second game, 6-0. The losses drop Southern to 17-25 overall and 8-14 in the NE10 while also giving them a record of 6-9 in the Southwest Division. Pace improves to 27-12 overall and 13-8 in the conference including an 8-5 record in Southwest play.

Jim Palmer (Milford, Conn.) had a hit in each game of the doubleheader to give him three for the day while Tyler Criscuolo (Branford, Conn.) was 2-for-3 with a double in the second game. Mac Finnegan (Old Saybrook, Conn.) hit his team-leading fourth home run of the season for the Owls' only run in the first game.

Game 1 (Pace 14, Southern Connecticut 1)
  • Pace used a three-run homer from Brian Bohander in the top of the 1st to post a four-run inning and jump to an early lead.
  • After the home run, Southern starter Joe Nemchek settled in and allowed just one base runner through the top of the fifth retiring 11-straight batters before a one-out single in the top of the 6th.
  • The Owls got on the board in the fifth inning when Mac Finnegan led off the inning with a home run to the deepest part of the park to cut the Setters' lead to 4-1.
  • A pair of hits resulting in a Setters' run knocked Nemchek out of the game and gave the ball to Patrick Webler with Pace holding a 5-1 lead.
  • Webler gave up a two-run home run to Mark Salmonese to push Pace's lead to 7-1, and also gave up a homer to Bohlander – his second of the day – to give Pace a 9-1 lead.
  • The Setters scored five times in the ninth – with only one run charged as earned – to grab a 14-1 lead.

Game 2 ( Pace 6, Southern Connecticut 0)
  • Owls starter Quantique White worked through a couple jams in the first two innings, but managed to pitch out of both. Pace manufactured a run in the top of the 3rd to break through and take a 1-0 lead.
  • The Setters came back the next inning with a four-run 4th to push their lead to 5-0 before the Owls gave up another run in the sixth.
  • Mike Ferrett (Hamden, Conn.), Brendan Ebert (Berlin, Conn.) and Tommy Hughes (Newington, Conn.) pitched an inning each in relief without giving up a run.

NOTES
  • With a walk in the first game, and a walk in the 2nd inning of the second game, before a 6th inning single, Tyler Criscuolo (Branford, Conn.) has now reached base safely in 25 consecutive games. The streak touches every game that he has played this season and ties Nick Lamberti's streak from 2017.
  • Lamberti was caught stealing in the first game, which would have stood as his 76 career stolen base and tied Marc Potocsky's record set from 2000 through 2002. Lamberti needs two more stolen bases to break the career mark.
  • Lamberti also has 214 career hits and trails Chris Borelli (218) for the fifth-most in program history.
  • Finnegan's home run gives him a team-leading four for the year and the most for the Owls in a season since Mike DeMartino hit four in 2017.
  • The last Owl to hit five in a season was Ryan Geffert, who clubbed 12 in 2012.
