Owls Drop Doubleheader to Saint Anselm


MANCHESTER. N.H. – The Southern Connecticut State University softball team fell to Saint Anselm in both games of their doubleheader, 4-1 and 8-0 at the South Athletic Field in Manchester. The Owls fall to 7-23 overall and 4-11 in the Northeast 10, while the Hawks improve to 21-7 overall and 9-1 in the NE10.
 
Game 1 – (Saint Anselm 4, Southern Connecticut 1)
  • Saint Anselm wasted no time getting on the board, striking in the first inning off a two-run home run to center field, 2-0.
  • No action occurred through the next three innings of play until the Owls broke the ice as Alexa Bacoulis (Monroe, Conn.) reached on an error allowing Buscetto to sneak home and score to cut the Hawks lead in half, 2-1. The Hawks took the bottom half of the fifth to add insurance runs, collecting two off two hits, 4-1.
  • Saint Anselm's home run in the first inning was the deciding factor in their game one win.
  • Jazmyn Martinez (Middletown, N.Y.) pitched her seventh complete game with two strikeouts in 24 batters faced.
 
Game 2 – (Saint Anselm 8, Southern Connecticut 0)
  • The Hawks kept their momentum from game one as they struck first again in the opening inning of play scoring off an error, 1-0. They added two more runs in the third inning, three more runs in the fifth and two runs in the sixth inning, 8-0.
  • Saint Anselm's steady play throughout the entire game secured their shutout win in game two of the doubleheader.
Notes
  • Game one was Jazmyn Martinez's seventh complete game pitched this season, surpassing her freshman year season total, where she pitched five games of seven-or-more innings. She ranks ninth in the NE10 in innings pitched with 75 in total.
  • Jacqueline Dumont leads the team in RBI with 19. She is also sixth in the Northeast 10 in RBI and tied for sixth in home runs with 3.
  • Buscetto added one stolen base on the day. Buscetto is second in stolen bases in the NE10, with 18 on the year. She is tied for fourth­ in hits in the NE10 with 33 and tied for 11th in runs with 17.

The Owls head to Garden City, N.Y. for a doubleheader meeting with Adelphi on Tuesday, April 9. Game one is set for 2 p.m.
